Finished: 16th
FA Cup: lost 4th round
Carling Cup: lost 5th round

The Highlight: The dramatic 3-2 win over fellow strugglers West Ham on the penultimate weekend - after trailing 2-0 - will live long in the memory.
The Lowlight: Alarm bells were triggered by a 6-0 home drubbing by Chelsea two games into the season.

The Lowdown: It started with Roberto Martinez being left red faced by newly-promoted Blackpool and ended with the Spaniard losing his wallet while celebrating after a dramatic final day victory at Stoke which secured the club's top-flight future.

And just two weeks after the season, Martinez repaid the loyalty of owner Dave Whelan by rejecting interest from Aston Villa to sign a new long-term contract.

The record books will show Martinez's side finished two places above the relegation zone with a three-point safety cushion. What they won't reveal is that Wigan spent most of the season in the bottom three, incapable of stringing a couple of wins together until it really mattered, right at the end of the campaign.

Had they not come from 2-0 down to defeat West Ham in their penultimate game and had Hugo Rodallega not headed a late winner at the Britannia Stadium with 12 minutes of the season remaining then Wigan would be preparing for life in the Championship - and Birmingham would be safe.

Instead the DW Stadium will host top-tier action for a seventh successive season, a fine achievement for a club of Wigan's size. Despite a long season of struggle - they were bottom of the table with seven games remaining - Martinez's side finished on 42 points, six more than last season when they also finished 16th.

But Martinez has to ensure there is no repeat of the last nine months when he begins his third season in charge. Martinez faces a big summer in terms of strengthening his squad. The defence, which managed just seven clean sheets, has to be a priority while Wigan's lack of goals was also a concern.

The solution to the latter problem could be staring Martinez in the face. Conor Sammon, a £600,000 signing from Kilmarnock in January, has shown great promise along with young
Callum McManaman. But the key to avoiding another season of struggle rests with holding on to players like Charles N'Zogbia, James McCarthy, and Rodallega.

Three pros:
Emmerson Boyce - consistent, brave, and influential.
Ali Al Habsi - the on-loan Bolton keeper left fans pleading with Martinez to sign him up permanently.
Rodallega - nine crucial top-flight goals including winners against Tottenham and Stoke.

Three cons:
Mauro Boselli - put Martinez under pressure after failing to settle following his £6 million move from Argentina.
Franco Di Santo - angered fans on Twitter before closing his account down.
Daniel De Ridder - former Ajax man managed just one appearance after falling out of favour.

By the numbers:
0 - goals scored against the top three, Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City, home and away.
1 - times the team won back-to-back league games.
10 - goals conceded in the first two games.
23 - players who started Premier League matches.
10,000,000 - the amount of pounds Wigan want if they cannot convince N'Zogbia to stay.
