Recognized as one of the world’s leading sports nutrition experts, Dr. Asker Jeukendrup joined the Gatorade Sports Science Institute in June, 2011 as Global Senior Director. Asker’s appointment reflects a commitment to refueling and expanding the brand’s scientific work and the resurgence of its prominence as a sports nutrition thought leader globally.

In addition to leading GSSI, Asker remains an adjunct professor at the University of Birmingham and is based in the UK.

At the age of 35, he became the youngest professor at the University of Birmingham and has received several awards for his academic achievements and contributions to sport and exercise sciences, including a chair at the University of Brussels. His research had significant impact on the field of sports nutrition and the composition of sports drinks as well as the advice given to athletes has changed in the last few years as a result of Asker’s research.

Originally from Roermond, Holland, Asker holds a PhD from Maastricht University. He is a distinguished sports and exercise nutritionist and has authored several books including High Performance Cycling, a Textbook on Sports Nutrition and Sports Nutrition From Lab to Kitchen. Additionally, Asker has published over 200 peer reviewed journal articles and book chapters on exercise and sports nutrition. He has made it his mission to translate the science into practical applications that will benefit people who want to achieve their individual exercise goals, whether this is medals at the Olympic Games or simply exercising for better health. He has organized numerous International Conferences on the topic of sports nutrition.

Asker is a Fellow of American College of Sports Medicine and European College of Sport Sciences and also a member of the Nutrition Society, Physiological Society, American Physiological Society, the New York Academy of Sciences and the American Diabetic Association.

Asker is the Editor-in-Chief for the European Journal of Sport Science, member of the Advisory Editorial Board of the Journal of Sports Sciences, and served on the editorial board of the International Journal of Sports Medicine and Medicine and Science in Sport and Exercise. To date, Asker has served as a reviewer for 35 different scientific journals.

Asker was a member of the IOC steering group, Sports Nutrition, which established a consensus statement in 2003 and 2010. He currently sits on the International Advisory board for the IOC Diploma in Sports Nutrition and is one of the course instructors.
