Valhalla

The DC Hall of the Dead

Heroes | Villains

About the Cemetery, Valhalla

From The Daily Planet Guide to Metropolis, published by West End Games:

"The place in question is Chapel Hill Cemetary in Metropolis. It contains the remains of at least the Crimson Avenger I, Hourman I, the Atom I, Tomorrow Woman and Dr. Mid-Nite I. It also contains memorials to Flash (Barry Allen), Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) and Metamorpho.

Visiting Hours are Monday-Saturday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 12 p.m. until 5 p.m. Loud noises and large groups not allowed. "Closed to general public during memorial services for heroes."

Though this was an unofficial DC publication, it seems a logical. So for the purposes of this page, the Chapel Hill Cemetary and Valhalla shall be considered one and the same.

Valhalla appearances

These depictions are probably of the same cemetary, they vary between artists. It's also plausible that there is a JLA memorial site separate from the actual grave site (ike the Hall of Fallen Heroes in the Legion headquarters).

  • JLA #5 (May 1997). Visible Statues: Atom I, Dr. Mid-Nite I, Flash II, Green Arrow I, Green Lantern II, Hourman I, Ice, Johnny Quick I, Metamorpho, Tomorrow Woman. Immortal Man is also mentioned. Others graves are present, but unidentified. The memorials for Hourman, Atom, and Dr. Mid-Nite are separate statues in JLA and one large statue in JSA.
  • Hourman #2 (May 1999); visible statues: Tomorrow Woman, Green Lantern (Hal Jordan), Green Arrow, Hourman (Rex Tyler), Ice, Metamorpho and Flash II.
  • JSA #1 (Aug. 1999): Sandman, Crimson Avenger, Red Bee
  • JSA #15 (Oct. 2000): Celsius, Golden Eagle, Prince Ra-Man, Col. Rick Flagg
  • JSA #21 (April 2001): Skyman (Sylvester Pemberton)
  • Secret Files and Origins Guide to the DC Universe 2000: The Atom I, Dr Mid-Nite, Elasti-Girl, Fate, General Glory, Green Arrow I, Jericho, Johnny Quick, Metamorpho, The Red Bee, Scott Fischer, Skyman. G'nort also appears, but he is not dead. Other unlabelled graves are visible.
  • Hawkman #17 (Sept. 2003): Katar Hol's (Hawkman III) statue added
  • Flash #200 (September 2003). Starman statue appears.
  • DC Universe: Last Will and Testament (October 2008). Wonder Woman and Donna bury keepsakes at Valhalla, something to return for.

Things changed after this, when in…

  • Nightwing #151 (Feb. 2009). Dick Grayson tells Superman and the JLA about his recent caper, where the graves of Valhalla were scavenged for meta-DNA. The JLA clears out all the actual remains from Valhalla, relocating all the corpses to a crypt beneath the Hall of Justice, in Washington D.C. The memorials remained at Valhalla, however.
  • Solomon Grundy #5 (Sept. 2009). Phantom Stranger pays a visit to Valhalla, sensing great evil is rising. New memorials are shown for Jade, the Human Bomb, Black Condor II and Phantom Lady II.
  • Blackest Night #0-1 (Sept. 2009). On Memorial Day, many heroes gather at Valhalla, which is now just statues. Damage especially feels more remorse for the fallen Freedom Fighters than his own father.
