Japan restricts green tea over radiation fears, AFP, June 2, 2011:
Japan banned the shipment of green tea leaves grown in four prefectures around Tokyo on Thursday after radioactive caesium above legal levels was found in samples, a media report said. [...]
The ban covers tea leaves from parts of the Tochigi, Chiba and Kanagawa prefectures and all of Ibaraki prefecture, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare said, Kyodo News agency reported. [...]
Kanagawa prefecture then started a recall of the tea after measuring about 570 becquerels of caesium per kilogramme in leaves grown in the city of Minamiashigara. The legal limit is 500 Bq/kg.
The Fukushima Daiichi plant is located some 220 kilometres (135 miles) northeast of Tokyo and 280 kilometres from Minamiashigara.

Someone earlier today commented on seeing a plume of smoke that was not coming from the Dai-Ichi reactors.
I’m saying.. we have trouble at the Dai-Ni plant, etc.
The people are REALLY not being told the truth.

Could be, though hydrogen is invisible as a gas at all temperatures. If the rods are uncovered and the zircaloy cladding is reacting with water vapor, then hydrogen is being liberated. I don’t believe the fuel is melting and volatilizing just yet however. The cladding itself does not burn away, it just reacts to form zirconium hydrides. The fuel needs to be VERY hot to vaporize and for that to happen there has to be little to no water left in the pool. Let’s just hope it’s blowing off some steam and TEPCO is adding more water.

An interesting thing I’ve noticed in the live feed are the little white spots that appear randomly in the picture periodically. These could be caused by gamma rays hitting the CCD in the camera. The same thing happened to films taken at Chernobyl during the cleanup.
Just waiting for this category messages to come .. Japan will be unlivable! Startin evac plans surrounding countries best thing to do IMHO.
Beginning the week of the 14th of March, all of the initial data taken from various sources indicated that indeed radiation had begun to spread rapidly like it did in Chernobyl. The explosions no doubt sent large plumes of radiation around the country and have been accumulating since then. We therefore concluded that Tokyo will have to be evacuated – but they won’t until people become ill first. Remember, it’s always about the money first, people second.
One fortunate thing is that private radiation detectors are increasing in Tokyo (perhaps soon to be banned). If the levels get extremely high, word will get out about it.
If Tokyo has to be abandoned, it might be a death blow to the already shaky world financial system through a domino effect. Evacuation might actually be more dangerous than the population staying put and suffering from a very high rate of cancer and other illnesses. I don’t know, just a thought.

some days ago high radiation above the dose limit was detected in tea leaves in shizuoka prefecture.
but the farmers and the governor’s opinion: “it’s unfair that the dose limit for tea leaves is the same as for other vegetables!”

man… I’m really hoping for that day when quite high radiation will be detected in the US so the US troops come to Japan to make fukushima an end. please.

Actually, some Asian tea producers dry their tea leaves using truck exhaust and leaded fuel.
I was thinking the opposite, since the US would never again force Japan to do anything – politically unfeasible. I was thinking that only undeniably very high levels of fallout in Tokyo would shift the govt’s ass into high gear, to throw all resources at the problem, and to accept the tremendous amount of expertise and help offered by the rest of the world.

The scientists at llrc.org suggest avoiding anything that has over 50 Bq per litre or kilogram. That is the point at which the increased risk of cancer becomes mathematically more obvious.

This is an article I stumbled upon about Cesium 137 during the early 60′s. If anyone can make sense of it, feel free to do so. From what I’d gathered, it looks like having Cesium around really didn’t amount to much, but I’m no scientist.

I prefer Pekoe black tea like Lipton and Luzianne. I know Lipton gets most of their tea from Ceylon and Africa (Kenya and Tanzania). Not sure about Luzianne (maybe Ceylon?). Japanese green tea is going to become like it or not a trade commodity casuality in the vein of Chinese powdered milk scandal (incidentally there was a milk tea made by Lipton in 2008 that had some of the infamous plastic Chinese milk powder). What a public relations nightmare for those hardworking Japanese. I understand the government doesn’t have a plan for disposing of the toxic leaves. Can’t burn them and there is no room at the friendly Japanese storage inn for Radioactive Mary Tea. In 1986 The Turks sold a lot of their tea after Chernobyl to the Russians (possibly in anger, maybe not) but that ploy probably won’t be an option with Internet publicity. The power of the Net will save some shoppers.
