Steve Martin stars in this remake of the 1950 Vincente Minnelli classic as shoe executive George Banks, whose happily married existence hits a bump when he greets his daughter Annie (Kimberly Williams), home from a semester studying in Europe. She tells her father that she is engaged to be married. When the shocked George asks to whom, she says his name is Bryan (George Newbern) and that he is an "independent communications consultant." George is even more shocked when he finds out what the

Neither the '90s nor the husband-wife team of Nancy Meyers and Charles Shyer (they wrote the new version, she co-produced, he directed) can match the original film's grace or wit.

Best stuff here comes strsight from Martin, such as his frenzied antics in the in-laws' house or his ridiculous Tom Jones imitation in front of a mirror in a too-tight tuxedo.

The material has been successfully refurbished with new jokes and new attitudes, but the earlier film's most memorable moments have been preserved.

[A] slight but delightfully sweet-natured new comedy starring Steve Martin.

This is a movie with heart, and there are little moments in it when Martin is deeply moved by the fact that this perfect creature he brought into the world is now going to start a family of her own.

After a provocative setup, this Touchstone Pictures offering pads innocuously down the aisle, a remake that doesn't touch the Spencer Tracy classic of the same name.

The film belongs to Steve Martin, whose crisp, almost bitter delivery, although frequently off-putting, manages to put an edge to a film that, without him, would be mush.

The film does work, but not quite as well as the Hepburn-Tracy classic that it seeks to replace. Mildly amusing.

A charming, if pointless remake of the Spencer Tracy classic.

Humdrum remake of Tracy classic, but has its moments with Steve Martin.

See Spencer Tracy in the original instead.

Some sequences and dialogue are lifted directly from the original, but in the wider context, this merely serves to underline the remake's comparative lack of tenderness and subtlety.

It is an adorable little film that has not lost its spark in the past fifteen years.

For all its glad-handing of cheer and all-encompassing warmth, has a heart as tiny and cold and calculated as a Grinch's.

...it's not difficult to see why the film has endured since it's release or why a sequel was commissioned just a few years later.

Some parts were sweet without being sugary even in 1991, and they're still as sweet today.

Not much more than a fluffy little valentine of a movie, but there's still some actual warmth and wit underneath the "been there, seen that, nice wedding" exterior.

While it tries too hard to be poignant and meaningful, it remains a heartwarming reminder of Hollywood's earlier days of happily-ever-after. (15th Anniversary Edition)

This 1991 update of Father of the Bride may not be quite as touching or as funny as the older version, but it is still lighthearted, gentle, sweet, frothy fun.

Is the wedding cake outrageously expensive? Get over it, George.

This is a good family movie. I wouldn't say this was hilarious as some of the scenes seemed to be. But this was decent. I haven't seen the original movie. But this was enough to give me the general idea of that. I liked the wedding planner most. He was the best character that made me laugh.
