Classification of cricket matches from 1697 to 1825

Introduction | Classification

Introduction

The purpose of this page is to classify early cricket matches according to status as first-class, significant or other/minor. Given that new information might yet come to light, the results are not carved in stone and it can take literally seconds to update this document and present an amended view based on analysis of new or changed data (or, indeed, to correct any errors). Correcting or updating a printed book is somewhat more difficult.

First-class cricket is a term applied to eleven-a-side matches of three or more days duration where the teams have the option to play two innings each. So they differ from single wicket and limited overs matches which are the other forms of major cricket. There are exceptions to the rule and some twelve-a-side matches are generally regarded as first-class; as are some matches scheduled for less than three days; and, although I don't know of any, perhaps even some single innings matches.

The idea of cricket that was of a first-class standard became popular in England in the 1890s after the official County Championship was established. MCC defined first-class status from the 1895 season based on certain clubs and other teams recognised by MCC. The ICC underlined this in 1947 and it became official globally. The problem is that the ICC declared that its ruling was not retrospective and so all historians or statisticians have to decide for themselves which of the earlier matches qualify for first-class status. So, it is all a matter of opinion and it has been formerly a cause of division. In 2010, CricketArchive adopted 1772 as the startpoint for first-class statistics in agreement with Stumpsite and other sources. Their action has enabled an overall accord to be adopted in terms of which matches should be designated first-class and Stumpsite has agreed to comply with CricketArchive's first-class matchlist. Note that previous variations between the two matchlists were minor and amounted to no more than half a dozen games in the early 19th century, a period of which our knowledge is by no means complete. NB: the matchlist is currently being revised so some variations may still be noted in the short term.

However, Stumpsite retains its view that first-class cricket is a statistical concept and not necessarily a historical one. Therefore, matches without scorecards that would probably be first-class otherwise should not be classed as "minor" or "other matches" and the classification of "significant" has been adopted as a middle ground. Significant status also applies to some matches with scorecards that don't quite meet the first-class criteria but do have a measure of historical importance. The main examples of the latter are the two 1744 matches whose scorecards are really too isolated for inclusion in the statistical first-class record.

Roy Webber said in his Playfair Cricket Records that first-class cricket records should begin in 1864. Bill Frindall said 1815 in his Wisden Cricket Records. The ACS said it should begin earlier to encompass all the Gentlemen v Players matches but were for many years undecided about how early. Some said 1801 and others said 1772 which is now the standard in statistical terms.

As mentioned above, Stumpsite has always maintained that 1772 does mark the start of major cricket's "statistical record" vis-à-vis its "historical record", which is much older. But major cricket is not just a statistical concept, it is essentially historical.

The evolution of cricket towards what may be termed major status began in the 1660s in the wake of the Restoration. Evidence of cricket before Cromwell's day indicates that it was played at inter-parish level only. There are no surviving references to inter-county cricket or even to teams that represented more than one parish, which is not to say that such teams did not exist, only that there is no known record of them. The nature of Cromwell's regime was such that even village cricket for no stakes was frowned upon, though it was at least tolerated, perhaps because Cromwell is believed to have played cricket himself. So it would seem there was no representative cricket before the Restoration. The revival of popular entertainment in 1660 was accompanied by an explosion of gambling that increased investment in the sport and enabled some good players to become professional. Gradually, a few prominent investors became patrons and began to form teams which were representative of more than one parish, although I think it was probably not until the 1730s that these teams became representative of whole counties (it was in 1739 that the first known reference to an "All-England" team is found). There are no records of any matches in the aftermath of the Restoration because freedom of the press was not granted until the government repealed the prohibitive Licensing Acts in 1696. In 1697, the first known newspaper report about a "great match" concerns the one in Sussex that was played for fifty guineas, a colossal sum at the time, indicating that two strong teams were assembled.

The end date of 1825 is because of the Lord's pavilion fire on 28 July 1825 which destroyed many irreplaceable records. The records are more reliable after 1825. The status of matches is clearer and can be more readily agreed upon. Before 1825, you never can be sure about the surviving records. As Arthur Haygarth often complained, there is considerable inconsistency; and we don't know how many records were lost irretrievably. So all we can do is base our analysis upon the known records but, being positive, there is more than enough data to enable a meaningful analysis to be completed.

Classification

Single wicket was the other form of major cricket in this period. At present, I've included all the single wicket matches I've found up to and including the famous one in 1775 when Lumpy "scored three goals" by bowling the ball through John Small's wicket three times and thereby succeeded in getting the middle stump introduced. More research is needed for 1776 to 1825 and I hope to find time for this in due course.

Notes: a first-class or significant match in blue font has a surviving scorecard; one in red font does not. The "other matches" are not intended to be exhaustive; they are matches that have interested me personally and some of them are marginal in terms of their status.
