Seven broadcast and one cable series made the cut in the Most Exciting New Series category at the inaugural Critics’ Choice Television Awards. The category, voted by broadcast journalists who have seen the pilots and any available episodes, recognizes shows premiering after June 1, 2011. Some of the most buzzed-about new series, including NBC's Smash and Fox's New Girl and Terra Nova, made the list, while others, including CBS' Person of Interest and 2 Broke Girls and ABC's Pan Am, didn't. Here are the honorees (there will be no winner in the category, with all eight shows acknowledged at the awards show June 20):
Alcatraz - Fox - Warner Bros.
Apartment 23 - ABC - 20th Century Fox
Awake - NBC - 20th Century Fox
Falling Skies - TNT - DreamWorks
New Girl - Fox - 20th Century Fox
Ringer - CW - CBS Studios
Smash - NBC - DreamWorks/Universal Media
Terra Nova - Fox - 20th Century Fox
The nominees in the other categories, recognizing best programs and performances in Drama, Comedy, Reality and Talk Show, were announced Monday. The Critics’ Choice Television Awards luncheon, hosted by Cat Deeley, will be streamed live from the Beverly Hills Hotel on June 20 on VH1.com. It will be telecast on ReelzChannel premiering June 22.

Pan Am should be in that category too. It seems to be getting positive buzz.
I thought Pan-Am was good looking but really mediocre. Weird choice to make the pilot a bubble and tell everything through flashback. And the spy thing is very silly.
Well, here’s what Joe Adalian said on Twitter on May 29.
“As busy at it is, I really enjoyed ABC’s pilot for Pan Am. Fun, well-written, lovely to look at. ABC mktng really botched trailer for it.”
Suburgatory should be on that list too.
Ringer is a CBS Television Studios show
How are these determined? Have the critics screened the pilots already, or is it just a “what I think sounds cool this fall” list?
From the article: “The category, voted by broadcast journalists who have seen the pilots and any available episodes, recognizes shows premiering after June 1, 2011.”
“Cool”, obviously. No way that Falling Skies is any good. Yet another alien invasion plus charisma vacuum Noah Wyle in the lead.
You know what shouldn’t be and is not….WHITNEY
Are these based on nothing?
I saw APT 23 and it’s absolutely going to be a smash hit. The casting is perfect and they push the envelope in the just the right way. Jason Winer does it again.
Excited for THE NEW GIRL and APT 23!
I prefer the old title Don’t Trust the Bitch in Apt 23
but I guess they were afraid to go for it. Looking forward to it either way.
Cannot understand hoe unforgetable got over looked !! I sat in a room of sdvertisers and grad students !! They thought the acting and directing was great !!
What is this? Who is on their knees when these nominations are given? The critics or the producers? And does the studio watch behind the two-way mirror?
and half are midseason!!!!!
This is kind of joke – critics are way out of touch with the masses (the people who actually matter.) These shows are all good, but they are all high-concept, quirky, smart shows that only costal critics would enjoy. Plus many pilots re-shoot & re-cast throughout the summer, so what merit does such a list hold?
Critics, at least the ones in the older Television Critics Association, are spread nation-wide, some of them in fairly small markets. And, sorry, Marie Antoinette, but “the masses” don’t all share the same taste.
This does seem like the most pointless award category ever. Why not an award for best craft services menu.
Damon Wayons was the funniest thing in New Girl and he’s not even going to be in it because Happy Endings came back on ABC
Alcatraz is the best of the bunch. Followed by Awake. Didn’t love the Ringer, tho.
This is seriously retarded– and smells of Golden Globe ass-kissing.
This is a seriously stupid category.
Don’t Trust the Bitch in APT 23 is amazing, Krysten Ritter is hysterical! VanDerBeek is a hoot, and Dreama is adorable.
I am so looking forward to “Ringer”. The concept is a lot like the 1985 Stephanie Powers mini-series “Deceptions”. Which was an awesome movie. Plus, Sarah Michelle Geller is in it. And let’s face it, not many actresses can do the Demi Moore crocodile tears thing but she sure can. Plus it’ll be interesting to see her play a rich bitch again after all these years.
Falling Skies is truly dreadful. Who are the people behind the Critics Choice Awards list? What were they thinking?
