A $50 iHerb Giveaway & CrueltyFreeFace.com launch!

I was recently contacted by the lovely folks at iHerb.com, home of over 19,000 items from vitamins to beauty items and asked if I was interested in doing a giveaway. The answer? HELL YES.

First, they let me select some items for myself. I opted for mainly beauty products, like Beauty Without Cruelty blush in Rosetta and Moisturizing Lipstick in Soft Pink and Red Red, and Shikai Shower Gel in Yuzu (a staple around here). The Beauty Without Cruelty Red Red is a GREAT shade and I've been having fun wearing it. I also decided to try out Amazing Grass Green Superfood Drink Powder, but after two tries, I forgot about it and it ended up in the back of the refrigerator.

Now it's YOUR turn to spend $50 at iHerb.com! This contest is open to everyone around the world and the winner will have to register at iHerb to select their items. (International winners are responsible for any additional customs fees, duties and taxes.)

Here's now to enter:
Leave a comment letting me know what you would order with $50 from iHerb.com! Keep it vegan kids, we're strictly cruelty free up in this piece! A winner will be selected next Tuesday, so get your entry in by Monday, July 5th at Midnight PST.

New customers can use the code IVI541 for $5 off their order! iHerb offers FREE Domestic UPS Ground Shipping for Orders over $40 and there's a 99% Chance of Same Day Shipping for Orders Placed before 1 pm, PST. My order arrived FAST and I was smothered in Red Red lipstick in no time!

Speaking of lipstick, I just launched a new webpage called Cruelty Free Face!
What you may not know is I've been a makeup artist for 10 years and when I went vegan, I found it difficult to find cruelty free cosmetics. I thought I should share my findings with others, so they can make an ethical choice, and Cruelty Free Face was born!

Cruelty Free Face is your resource for compassionate cosmetics without animal testing or animal ingredients. Everything on the site is vegan friendly, animal friendlier! Not only will there be product reviews, beauty news, and makeup tutorials, but the cruelty free cosmetics database will constantly be updated in the “Companies” section.

Whether you're a makeup junkie or just need some new eyeliner, Cruelty Free Face is the place to be! In fact, if you need makeup, it's a good place to cross reference the items at iHerb.com, so you're not putting carmine on your face, ick! Don't forget to follow Cruelty Free Face on twitter @crueltyfreeface.

More New York City fun!

Peanut Brittle and Caramel, Marshmallow, Graham Cracker ice cream at Lula's Sweet ApothecaryLet's start with the most important part of my NYC trip, Lula's Sweet Apothecary! We all know I love ice cream and while I planned to have a treat or two at Lula's, I spent more time there than I should admit. Of course, when they ask you your favorite flavors before coming to town and grant your wishes, you can't help but indulge! Cake Batter and Chocolate Soft Serve at Lula's Sweet ApothecaryThe first of my dream flavors was Caramel, Marshmallow, Graham Cracker ice cream and OH MY WORD, it was delicious in a bowl with Peanut Brittle ice cream. It was also amazing in a sundae with Peanut Butter Jelly Banana ice cream topped with marshmallow, whipped cream, and a cherry! On another day, I went for fruity flavors and enjoyed Strawberry and Lime scoops.  Of course, I had to have some of their famous Cake Batter soft serve as well, so needless to say, I wasn't short on frozen dessert in NYC!

Sunday was the day of the Veggie Pride Parade with 1,000 vegetarians and vegans marching on the streets of NYC! People in costumes of all shapes, sizes, and species wielding pro-veg signs made their way to Union Square for a day of speakers, food, and fun! I was happy to meet up with VKO from Lifestyles of the Chic and Vegan, Dynise, author of The Urban Vegan, and new friends from Vegan Good Things and Brazil Nut and walk the route.Viva Herbal Santa Rosa slice

The parade was a blast, I met lots of amazing people, and heard great speakers, which worked up an appetite! Lindsay from Happy Herbivore, her husband, Dayna from Seitan Said Dance and I headed over to Viva Herbal, home of a plethora of vegan options. Once there, we ran in to Sara Sohn from Sweet and Sara Marshmallows (& more!) and friend Ethan! Like last time, I went for the Santa Rosa slice with its crispy whole wheat crust, sun-dried tomatoes, kalamata olives, mushrooms, and miso tofu. I made sure to leave room for dessert, especially since it was a hot day, so we all headed to Lula's!S'Mac- Vegan Mac N Cheese

After hearing good things about S'Mac, aka Sarita's Mac and Cheese from friends on Twitter, I decided to check it out with Evan. They recently added vegan mac and cheese with a creamy "cheese" sauce, which they bake in a cast iron skillet and bring to you. I was under the impression they had vegan cheese like Daiya, but nope, it's house made and seems to have some coconut milk in it.  The breadcrumbs are a must, but they also offer vegetables to mix-in, if your heart desires. I opted for the small size and it was good, but overall I found it to be a bit pricey. If you LOVE Mac 'n' Cheese, check it out, friends have been raving about it.

Souen bowl with YubaOn my final day in NYC, Lan Cafe once again foiled my plans to eat there, so we switched it up and Terry, Paula, and I headed to Souen Organic Ramen, a macrobiotic spot in the East Village. They have locations in Soho and Union Square as well, but this is their noodle house. We started off with Seitan Dumplings that were a bit mushy, but not too bad. After that, it was ramen time! I opted for the Tahini Ramen with added Yuba, while Terry had the Sesame Ramen, and Paula had the Ramen Salad. Everything was fresh and tasty and the company was excellent, making for a great final meal in NYC.

Well, that's it for NYC this time! I'm sure I'll be back there soon and have the scoop on more delicious food. Next week I should have a fun giveaway or some news in store for you, so stay tuned!

New York City vegan dining is still awesome!

The manuscript for The Vegan Girl's Guide to Life is officially out of my hands and in to the hands of my editor, meaning I can get back to posting regularly! That is, until we make the big move overseas in about 6 to 8 weeks. Vegan Chicken Bacon Cheddar Ranch & Butterfinger Shake at TerriA few weeks ago I made a trip to New York City to hang with friends, go to the Veggie Prom and Veggie Pride Parade, and shoot photos for The Vegan Girl's Guide to Life with Hannah Kaminsky! So, let's get to it..

The newest spot on the NYC vegan dining scene is Terri, smack dab in the middle of Midtown. I've heard good things, so of course, I had to head there and check it out. I went with the Chicken Bacon Cheddar Ranch sandwich and my sister, who happened to be in town, went with the Buffalo Chicken sandwich. The bread was amazing! Fluffy, perfectly pressed, and they weren't skimpy on the fillings. Terri makes a solid sandwich, but the real star of the show was the Butterfinger shake! I was amazed at how much it tasted like the candy bar, as was my sister. I loved it!Angelica's Kitchen Special

Angelica's Kitchen is a vegan stronghold in the East Village and while it's a crunchy granola hippie joint, they have some damn good food. I went with my good friends Eliana and Jason, after a boxing class I took from Jason Strout himself, an amazing Boxing and Muay Thai fighter who was just named a top trainer in Time Out. We started with the appetizer special which was some sort of fried potato deliciousness. While I went for a pretty solid Market Pantry plate with sweet potatoes, tempeh, and kale, the clear winner was the special of the day. The special had the most amazing tofu ever, quinoa, and asparagus. Next time, I'll get the special, whatever it is!Oatmeal Raisin Cookie and Salted Caramel from Stogo

My heart belongs to Lula's Sweet Apothecary, but I decided to give Stogo another try, since Jason and Eliana love it so much and we wanted a treat after dinner. Yeah, it's pretty good. The Salted Caramel got old for me after awhile, but the Oatmeal Raisin Cookie ice cream was something new that held my interest. Once again, it's not the cheapest place for ice cream, so if you're on a budget, head elsewhere.HanGawi Pancakes

VKO from Lifestyles of the Chic and Vegan and I always have a great time together and plenty to talk about with our histories in the fashion industry. We met up at HanGawi for lunch, as we both love Korean food, evidenced by our last meal at Franchia! We started with 3 types of pancakes; Spicy Kimchi, Pumpkin, and Leek. While the Pumpkin was a bit bland, the other two were great. As an entree, I had the Greens and Mountain Vegetables over Brown Rice, a perfect, healthy lunch with a bit of spice from a kicky red sauce they provided. While the service isn't perfect, the food and atmosphere at HanGawi are lovely, which makes it worth a visit, especially if you're with company you enjoy.

S'Nice Vegan PaniniFriday night = Vegan Prom! Not sure if the vegan prom would have savory options, Michelle of MyZoeTrope, also the illustrator for my book, and I hit up S'nice in Brooklyn for a bite. I remembered Jason from SuperVegan recommending the Vegan Panini, so I took his advice and dug in. Excellent bread, marinated tofu, sundried tomatoes, and pesto, it was a great sandwich! S'nice recently added a Sushi sandwich that's getting rave reviews, so you may want to check it out, if that's your thing. We headed off to the Vegan Prom, hosted by Veggie Conquest, and did a bit of dancing, ate too many desserts, and mingled with friends, old and new.Boneshakers Rebel Cruiser

After a big night out at the prom, I woke up needing brunch, so I hightailed it to Brooklyn to meet a pack of friends at Boneshakers. Like last time, Terry (do you have her book Viva Vegan yet?!), Deb, and Jason were there, plus this time Emiko from Food Fight Vegan Grocery in Portland was in town, and joined us along with Deb's bike crew. The Rebel Cruiser was once again my poison of choice, I couldn't resist the fluffy kaiser roll, BBQ seitan, and creamy coleslaw piled high in this killer sandwich. I hope to make it for Sunday brunch next time, if it's as good as my sandwich was, I'll be thrilled.

Counter TapasSaturday night, after lounging in Central Park with friends and eating far too many of Evan's danishes, I headed to Lan Cafe to meet Terry and Abby. Surprise! They were so packed and the line was so long, we headed off to Counter instead. None of us being super hungry, we opted for small plates, tapas style. While the Spaghetti Squash Spaghettini was less than exciting, the Pommes Frites were tasty, and the Quinoa with Green Vegetables, and Ravioli were pretty good. I like Counter's brunch better than their dinner, but this was a fine meal.

Of course, there's much more to NYC, so come back next week for more, including LOTS of ice cream!

By the way, have you heard about Soyfucker Comic Zine? It's a comic zine with exclusively vegan writers and artists and Issue #1 is available now for only $2. The proceeds go to rotating animal charities, this time is Berkeley Humane Society, which recently had a fire, so not only do you get a fun comic zine, you're supporting animals too! Also, if you're an artist, Soyfucker is accepting artwork for Issue #2 NOW! fun.

Of Deadlines and New Tattoos..

Things are a bit nutty around here, since this Thursday I have a deadline major deadline; The Vegan Girl's Guide to Life manuscript is due! Needless to say, I am one busy ladybro. After 13 hours of editing today, I can't fathom writing a full post. As a peace offering, I thought I would reveal the final cover of the book though! Fun, right?

The Vegan Girl's Guide to Life is due out November 1st, and you can currently pre-order it on AMAZON and the Borders webpage!

As a side note, I found time to get a tattoo across my chest on Friday that's pretty appropriate with the current state of my life. The photo was taken right after it was finished, hence the redness. It says, "The Sanest Days are Mad", a lyric from a Morrissey song called "Why Don't You Find Out for Yourself?". "Don't rake up my mistakes, I know exactly what they are. And what do you do? Well, you just sit there. I've been stabbed in the back, so many many times, I don't have any skin, that's just the way it goes."

On that note, I hope to be back next week with a post about my adventures in New York! Now, back to writing the book! In the meantime, have you joined The Urban Housewife on Facebook?
