Si pedimos a cualquier persona si sabe SEAT Ibiza va a responder afirmativamente.
When the Italians knew its situation they cut tires with SEAT. The first model fruit of this divorce was SEAT Ronda, very similar to Fiat Rhythm. Using the platform de Ronda of segment C (today is known as compact), a compact car created another model aimed for the segment B, that is to say. In 1984 SEAT Ibiza appeared in the Paris Auto Salon. Here its legend begins. A Giugiaro project for the Golf II was junked by Volkswagen. It was rescued and embodied by SEAT. The company produced a new model with the minimal possible price, considering its delicate financial situation. The Ibiza was a fruit of industrial collaboration. The bodywork was a product of Italdesign Giugiario, Karmann dealt with the industrialization and Porsche mounted the engines. The first engines were gasoline engines 1.2 of 63 hp and 1.5 of 85 hp, and atmospheric diesel 1.7 of 55 hp. After restyling, they added 0.9 44 hp to the range (version Junior) and finally another System Porsche 1.7 of 110 hp appeared as a result of attempts to eliminate the loss of potency. It was suffering light restyling for half of its commercial life and even more serious changes in 1991 when Volkswagen began investing its money into the Spanish mark. In 1992 it was the official car of the Olympic Games in Barcelona. The Volkswagen arrival supposed a progress of the quality and the engineering. Its price was 824.000 pesetas for the basic model and 1.070.000 pesetas for the most equipped models. On having used a bigger platform this compact car was more comfortable than an average model, but it had some disadvantages. It had the hardest power steering and its services / consumption were worse than those ones of its rivals. It had three principal equipment lines: L, GL and GLX with bodyworks 3 and 5 doors. Other versions were a Base, Special, Disc, Chrono, Designer, Fashion, SXi... The SEAT Malaga can be considered sedan version of the Ibiza, they had very much in common and they stopped being produced almost simultaneously. It was a real success of production. 1.281.388 units had been produced until the factory was dismantled on having finished the production. The number of exports was important, only in 1990 119.000 units got abroad. Despite its success, it never received the award of car of the year in Spain, which its rivals Peugeot 205, Citroen AX, Ford Fiesta or Renault Clio until 1993 were awarded. At present it keeps on being produced under another name in China, Nanjing Yuejin Soyat or Eagle. In the next article we will talk about the next generation, from 1993 to 2002.
