Disney's long-gestating animated film King of the Elves is back on the front burner thanks to an infusion of new creative blood.

Variety reports that Michael Markowitz (Horrible Bosses) has been hired to script the adaptation of the Philip K. Dick short story from 1953 upon which the movie is based.

Bolt's Chris Williams takes over from the previous team of Aaron Blaise and Robert Walker as the movie's creative shepherd, with John Lasseter aboard as a producer. The trade adds that Disney has tentatively slated it for a holiday 2013 release.

Here's Disney Animation's official plot synopsis for the film:

"Legendary storyteller Phillip K. Dick's short story (his only experiment in the fantasy genre) becomes the basis for this fantastic and imaginative tale about an average man living in the Mississippi Delta, whose reluctant actions to help a desperate band of elves leads them to name him their new king. Joining the innocent and endangered elves as they attempt to escape from an evil and menacing troll, their unlikely new leader finds himself caught on a journey filled with unimaginable dangers and a chance to bring real meaning back to his own life."
