Renovation of Small Hydropower Plants by Hydropower Construction Division in 2005

EGAT was approved by The National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB) to renovate five small Hydropower Plants in a budget of 1,837.16 million Baht. The approved budget for the project consists of both local loan currencies and EGAT's revenue. The project benefit/cost analysis was assessed and it could be concluded from the study that the project is technically and economically feasible. The energy from the five small Hydropower Plants is an important replacement energy since it can reduce the imported oil and natural gas from overseas for energy production. Furthermore, the project can increase the operating efficiency of five small Hydropower Plants due to operated for more than 30 years. The five small Hydropower Plants are:

1. Ubol Ratana Hydropower Plant The Power Plant is located at Ubol Ratana dam. The dam is located on the Nam-Pong river, Tambon Kok-Soong , Amphur Ubol Ratana, approximately 50 km. north of the city of Khon-Kaen province. The dam is a multipurpose dam for development of electricity, irrigation for agriculture (approximately 302,000 Rai), flood control,, transportation, fisheries and tourist spot. The dam is an earth core rockfill dam and was constructed in 1984. The Catchment Area is 12,000 km2, Normal Flood Level is 182.00 m (MSL), Maximum Storage Capacity is 2,559 million M3. The total installed capacity of turbine and generators is 3 units of 8,400 KW each and annual energy production is 57 Gwh. The operation of the 3 units was started on February 4, 1966, March 14, 1996 and June 12, 1968 respectively. The 3 units have been operated for about 38 years.

2. Chulabhorn Hydropower Plant The Power Plant is located at Chulabhorn dam, Amphur Khon-San, Chaiyaphum province, approximately 60 km. west of Amphur Chumphae. The dam is an earth core rockfill dam and was constructed between February, 1970 and October, 1972. The Catchment Area is 545 km2 , Normal Flood Level is 760.5 m (MSL), Maximum Storage Capacity is 208 million M3. The total installed capacity of turbine and generators is 2 units of 20,000 KW each and annual energy production is 59 Gwh. The operation was started on October 1972.

3. Sirindhorn Hydropower Plant The Power Plant is located at Sirindhorn dam. The dam is located on the Dom-Noi river, Amphur Pibulmangsaharn, Ubol Ratchathani province. The dam is an earth core rockfill dam and was constructed in June 1968. The Catchment Area is 2,097 km2 , Normal Flood Level is 142.2 m (MSL), Maximum Storage Capacity is 1,966.5 million M3. The total installed capacity of turbine and generators is 3 units of 12,000 KW each and annual energy production is 90 Gwh. The operation was started in 1971.

4. Nam-Poong Hydropower Plant The Power Plant is located at Nam-Poong dam. The dam is located on the Poong river, Amphur Kood-Bak, Sakolnakorn province. The dam is an earth core rockfill dam and was constructed in February 1964. The Catchment Area is 297 km2 , Normal Flood Level is 284 m (MSL), Maximum Storage Capacity is 165 million M3. The total installed capacity of turbine and generators is 2 units of 3,500 KW each and annual energy production is 15.50 Gwh. The operation was started in October 1965

5. Kang Krachan Hydropower Plant The Power Plant is located at Kang Krachan dam. The dam is located on the Petchaburi river, Amphur Tha-Song-Yang, Petchaburi province. The dam is an earth fill dam and was constructed in 1961. The Catchment Area is 2,210 km2 , Normal Flood Level is 102.65 m (MSL), Normal Storage Capacity is 710 million M3. The installed capacity of turbine and generator is 1 units of 19,000 KW and annual energy production is 77.2 Gwh. The operation was started in August 1974.

The five small Hydropower Plants will be renovated during 2005 and 2008. Overall management will be done by Hydro Power Construction Division which has an experience in hydro power plant renovation for 14 years.
