Some of you may have read the NME's announcement that Adam Ant is recording a new album this year and is set for a big comeback. We were as excited as the next Antfan when we broke this same news a month ago (sigh) but all is not as it seems.

Holy Moly has been in touch with the Ant camp, who are keen to reach out and set the record straight.

The NME revealed that Adam has been recording a new album to be called 'Adam Ant Is The Blueblack Hussar in Marrying The Gunner's Daughter', but according to our mole this is untrue. Only rough demos have been recorded, with Chris McCormack of 3 Colours Red and Andy Bell out of Ride (oh and Oasis, apparently). The material is said to be "really good" but far from ready for release and most of what's been said about it by Adam is "all delusion".

Adam, who hasn't released an album since 1995's Wonderful has also apparently turned down a new record deal with his former label Sony and walked away from a big bucks deal to tour.

More troublingly, our source says Adam is avoiding mental health workers, refusing advice from friends and is being watched closely by police who fear a repeat of the incidents in 2002 and 2003 which saw the 55-year-old star arrested and sectioned under the mental health act.

The news will come as a blow to fans who may have viewed his recent guerrilla gigs as a sign that Adam Ant was back to full health and ready to return. Although he's set to appear at a sold out headline show at London's The Scala on April 30, Adam failed to show for two scheduled supports slots with The Glitter Band last weekend, with some reports claiming he'd refused to leave his house.

Our mole told us they fear things will not end well if people keep encouraging Adam Ant to perform in his current state.

55 years old now? He's had these mental health problems since he stopped topping the charts. Real shame but he's running out of time too.
