Safety

Atlantic Southeast has one of the strongest safety records in the airline industry thanks to the commitment to safety that our crews, mechanics, ground agents and operations people put forth every day through their actions.

Atlantic Southeast people are supported through a strong corporate commitment to safety that includes Atlantic Southeast’s safety mission to reduce operational risk and support safe operations. This is accomplished through two well-developed industry strategies:

  1. Proactively identifying and mitigating incident/accident precursors by understanding operational threats and human errors through data, and
  2. Reactively identifying causal factors and lessons learned following an incident. Both strategies are built on a foundation of open and timely communication between front-line employees and management.

Proactive Safety Programs

Atlantic Southeast puts our safety philosophy into action by implementing proven technology and programs that foster our strong safety culture. In many cases, Atlantic Southeast’s safety programs are voluntary and go above and beyond industry standards.

Safety Management System (SMS)
Atlantic Southeast is on pace to be one of the first regional airlines to implement the Safety Management System (SMS) approach to safety. This industry best practice manages safety risks by identifying hazards and mitigating risks within a safety system defined by policies, risk assessment, assurance, and promotion. Atlantic Southeast is building on our robust safety culture and is currently developing our SMS despite there not being regulatory requirements to do so.

Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP)
The Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP) is a voluntary safety program that allows front-line employees to communicate safety concerns and human errors identified during the performance of daily operations. As the name implies, appropriate “safety action” is taken with every report following a review by a designated committee. Aggregate analyses are conducted to identify risk and potential trends. Atlantic Southeast has independent ASAP programs for our pilots, dispatchers and mechanics.

Flight Operational Quality Assurance (FOQA)
Flight Operational Quality Assurance (FOQA) is a voluntary safety program that involves the routine downloading of Digital Flight Data Recorder (DFDR) data for de-identified aggregate analysis of routine line operations. The results of the analysis offer insight into potential safety risks, procedural compliance, aircraft health monitoring, and operational efficiencies.

Line Operational Safety Audit (LOSA)
The Line Operational Safety Audit (LOSA) is a collaborative safety audit that places trained observers on flight deck jumpseats to collect safety-related data on environmental conditions, operational complexity and flight crew performance. The data are controlled, reviewed, analyzed and reported on by the LOSA Collaborative. This safety initiative has been recognized as an industry best practice for flight deck safety. Atlantic Southeast conducted its first LOSA in April 2010.

Reactive Safety Programs

Safety Investigations
Atlantic Southeast possesses the expertise and technology to conduct internal investigations as well as supporting regulatory requirements. Should an event occur requiring investigation to determine probable cause, and to mitigate the risk of a similar event, Atlantic Southeast is prepared.

International Air Transport Association

IOSA Registry
Atlantic Southeast is an associate member of IATA, and has secured its place on the IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) registry since September 2006. IOSA is considered the benchmark for global safety management in airlines. IOSA registration requires Atlantic Southeast to participate in bi-annual audits conducted by industry experts trained to evaluate and assess the operational management and control systems of an airline.
