2011 IRONMAN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP 70.3 QUALIFYING

Definitions

“70.3 Qualifying” means qualification to the 2011 Ironman World Championship 70.3 held at Lake Las Vegas, Nevada, on September 11, 2011.
“Races” means Ironman 70.3 branded events worldwide that are authorized by the World Triathlon Corporation.
Qualifying Year” means the period between October 1 and August 15.
“70.3 Pro Rankings” (70.3 PR) means the ranking system to determine pro athlete eligibility to race in the 2011 Ironman World Championship 70.3.

Outline

Beginning with Ironman 70.3 Austin on October 17, 2010, professional athletes will earn points for 70.3 Qualifying correlating to their finish position. The top 50 male and top 30 female pros in the 70.3 PR at the end of Qualifying Year will qualify to race in the 2011 Ironman World Championship 70.3.

70.3 PR scoring

  • An athlete’s five highest scoring Races will count toward their 70.3 PR.
  • Athletes may accumulate points from any Races during the Qualifying Year.
  • Athletes finishing the 2010 Ironman World Championship 70.3 will be awarded points that are retained during that Qualifying Year and can be included as one of the athlete’s five highest scoring races.
  • Points do not carry forward from one Qualifying Year to the next.

Qualifying Cut-offs

  • The top 40 male and top 25 female pros in the 70.3 PR as of July 18, 2011 (July Qualifiers) will be qualified to race in the 2011 Ironman World Championship 70.3.
  • July Qualifiers are assured of a slot in the 2011 Ironman World Championship 70.3 provided they complete the registration procedure.  Any slots not claimed will roll down to next highest ranked athlete.
  • Ties resulting in more than 40 male or 25 female July Qualifiers will be broken by the Tiebreakers (see below).
  • The highest ranking 10 male and 5 female pros in the 70.3 PR, not including the July Qualifiers, as of August 15, 2011 will qualify to race in the 2011 Ironman World Championship 70.3.
  • No more than 10 male and 5 female pros may be August Qualifiers.
  • Ties resulting in more than 10 male or 5 female August Qualifiers will be broken by the Tiebreakers.

Tiebreakers

Ties will be broken as follows:

  • 1st Tiebreaker – The athlete’s highest scoring race
  • 2nd Tiebreaker – The athlete’s second highest scoring race
  • 3rd Tiebreaker – The athlete’s third highest scoring race
  • In the event that two or more athletes remain tied after the 3rd tiebreaker, all tied athletes will qualify.

Final Entry & Roll-Down

  • The final 70.3 PR will be published no later than August 16, 2011.
  • Qualified athletes will have until August 19, 2011 to complete on-line registration for the 2011 Ironman World Championship 70.3.  A roll-down will be held for any unclaimed slots with entries rolling down to the next highest ranked athlete.

Automatic Qualifiers

  • Past Ironman 70.3 world champions will receive an invitation/exemption to enter the pro division in the Ironman World Championship 70.3 for a period of five years after their last championship.
  • Past Ironman 70.3 world champions will not be required to qualify in the 70.3PR during this five-year period.
  • Past Ironman 70.3 world champions entering as pros will be required to validate their entry by completing one Race, excluding the Ironman 70.3 World Championship, during the Qualifying Year.
  • Automatic Qualifiers will be accepted into the Ironman World Championship 70.3 in addition to the 80 pro slots. If, for example, a returning Ironman 70.3 world champion is ranked in the top 30 women, the 31st ranked woman will qualify for the Ironman World Championship 70.3.
