Pocatello - Alpha Kappa Psi professional business fraternity at Idaho State University will honor Duane B. Hagadone, founder, president, and CEO of the Hagadone Corporation as its 43rd Idaho Business Leader of the Year at a banquet and award ceremony March 23.
The event will be held in the Barbara J. Marshall Family Rotunda in the L. E. and Thelma E. Stephens Performing Arts Center.
"I am extremely honored to have been selected to receive the Idaho Business Leader of the Year award from Alpha Kappa Psi." Hagadone said. "When I learned that the selection process for the award was conducted by the students of the College of Business at Idaho State University, it even added more importance. Having been born and raised and having spent my entire life in the State of Idaho, it is truly a 'once in a lifetime' recognition."
Hagadone and company executives - Brad Hagadone, president of Hagadone Investment Company; Jerald Jaegar, president of Hagadone Hospitality Company; Jim Thompson, president of Hagadone Newspaper Company; Art Flagan, CFO and treasurer to the Hagadone Corporation and its subsidiaries; and Bernie Thompson, administrative assistant - will arrive early Thursday. As guest speakers in a number of College of Business classes, they will share their work experience and knowledge with students.
Hagadone will speak at 11 a.m. in the Pond Student Union Building Bengal Film Theater, followed by a luncheon at noon in the Salmon River Suite. All students and faculty are invited to participate; those wishing to attend the luncheon must make a reservation with Carl Brydon at email@example.com.
Hagadone began his career selling subscriptions at the Coeur d'Alene Press. He became the paper's publisher and eventually gained financial interest in newspapers that the Scripps brothers, owners of the paper, bought. In 1976, he formed his own company with six fully-owned newspapers. Today Hagadone Corporation includes four divisions: hospitality, real estate, newspapers, and investments.
In 2003, Hagadone turned over the corporation's day-to-day operations to financial officers and four division presidents, people who have worked for him for a combined total of 120 years. He now spends much of his time developing real estate and training young people to carry on his legacy.
Hagadone was inducted into the Horatio Alger Association in 2004. That organization comprises Americans who have overcome adversity and humble beginnings to achieve success. He currently serves on its board of directors. He has been inducted into the Idaho Hall of Fame and has been selected as The Most Influential Citizen in North Idaho for the past five years.
"Alpha Kappa Psi gives this award to honor outstanding business leaders in Idaho. These business leaders not only represent the ideals of the fraternity, they are people we, as students, would like to emulate in the world of business," said Alpha Kappa Psi representative Maria Tucker.
Alpha Kappa Psi has presented the Idaho Business Leader of the Year award since 1959. Anyone wishing to attend the banquet should call the College of Business at 208-282-3585 to make a reservation. Cost per ticket is $30.
