Applying to Michigan

The University of Michigan Law School seeks to form a class of talented and diverse students who will individually and collectively enrich the academic and social climate of the Law School community. When selecting among applicants, we seek to make the Law School a more stimulating place in which to learn and to improve its service to the legal profession and the public. Admission to the University of Michigan Law School is highly selective.

The Law School considers all aspects of an application to determine a candidate’s promise as a potential law student and practicing attorney. We carefully review essays and letters of recommendation to determine an applicant’s particular intellectual strengths, non-academic achievements, and unique personal circumstances, while also paying close attention to Law School Admission Test (LSAT) scores and undergraduate curricula and GPA.

Members of the Law School’s admissions staff are happy to meet with applicants, alone or in small groups, to answer general questions about the Law School and the application process, although evaluative interviews are not available. The Admissions Office offers student-led tours of the Law Quadrangle when classes are in session and maintains a list of classes that visitors are welcome to attend.
