   About Hamdard

In one of the by lanes of the historic old Delhi, a small unani clinic came into being in the year of 1906
Housed in a few rooms on one side of a spacious courtyard built around a sparkling fountain, the clinic was a modest effort aimed at reviving, invigorating and improving the ancient system of unani medicine and therapeutics

The man behind it was Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed, one of the well known unani practitioners of his days. Hakeem Abdul Majeed  had come from a family that included many Unani doctors, and he joined the unani pharmacy of the renowned Unani physician Ajmal Khan. As he developed his knowledge of medicine, he too became a Hakim and decided to establish his own pharmacy and clinic, which he called Hamdard Dawakhana.

Hafiz Abdul Majeed
Hamdard, meaning sympathy, refers here to "one who shares the pain of others and is willing to mitigate it" The idea uppermost in the crusading Hakeem’s mind was to break away from the old traditional of each practitioner making drugs and specific from his won closely guarded formulation and selling them exclusively to his patients. Sure enough, Hamdard began to flourish and prosper and its name became synonymous with integrity and high quality in he field of relatively inexpensive Unani medicines

Sadly Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed did not live long enough to see the flowering of his dream into the multidimensional and internationally known organization that it was to become in eth competent hands of his illustrious son- Hakeem Abdul Hameed

The exemplary life of Hakeem Abdul Hameed spanned almost the entire 20th century. Through sheer hard work, imagination, innovation and a strong will to march with changing times, he brought the dynamism of a new age to the philosophy and operation of Hamdard.
The setting up a modern laboratories and subjecting the various drugs to laboratory test brought the unani system of medicine on modern scientific lines for the first time. As a result not only Hamdard become a premier pharmaceutical house with a nationalist inspiration and a totally indigenous base, but it also emerged as mission to committed to the service the society at large

Hakeem Abdul Hameed took up the challenging taste of preparing a definitive edition of ibn sina’s al qanum fi’l-tibb and to translate into English. This work progressed under his supervision for 40 years.
His contribution to Unani system of medicine in India has given his international recognition. He was awared Padam Shir & Padma Bhushan for his outstanding contribution in Unani system of medicine
