Search the Handbook of Texas Online

Searching the Handbook of Texas Online:

To use the search engine, click on Search on the left-hand sidebar or on the Search tab in the Handbook sub-menu to the right of the About tab. In the Search window, enter the name or terms to search. The drop-down choices are to search anywhere within Handbook articles or to search only article titles or bylines.

To find a particular article, enter the name or words to search in the box and choose "in Title" from the drop-down menu.

To search for all articles by a specific author, enter the author name in the search box and choose "in Byline" from the drop-down menu.

Note that once the results of an initial search are returned, one can perform a second search within the returned results by entering additional search terms in the search box on the left and checking the box "Search within results."

By default, the search engine looks for all words included in the search box, whether the words are adjacent to each other or not. To find search terms as a group, choose "with the exact phrase" from the drop-down menu or place quotation marks around the phrase. These methods work when searching for dates such as July 4 or September 30 as well as for an exact phrase such as the "Battle of San Jacinto."
