RUE MORGUE PODCAST – KARIM HUSSAIN

This week on the podcast, we conduct a full-on inquiry into the multi-faceted, fevered brain of the writer/director/cinematographer extraordinaire, Mr. Karim Hussain.

As a director, his credits include such notable nasties as SUBCONSCIOUS CRUELTY and LA BELLE BETE.

As a writer, he co-wrote the Nacho Cerda film THE ABANDONED.

And as a cinematographer, he shot Olivier Abbou’s TERRITORIES and is the man responsible for the absolutely insane colour scheme in the HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN feature film which just hit DVD this week.

He also directed an installment of the forthcoming horror anthology THE THEATRE BIZARRE and shot the episodes directed by Douglas Buck and Richard Stanley.

I love this interview. And you will too. Amongst many things, it’s a fascinating tech heavy peak inside the trials and tribulations of a professional, impassioned cinematographer dedicated to plundering the perilous outer limits of the genre.

THE THEATRE BIZARRE will have its WORLD PREMIERE at the FANTASIA FILM FESTIVAL this Saturday, July 16th.

Second gory trailer for Art/Crime

Have you met your recommended daily allowance of Rue grue yet? If not, I’m here to help. Check out this gory (and thought-provoking) trailer for Art/Crime, a new documentary that explores the ongoing prosecution of special FX artist Rémy Couture. Our own Rodrigo Gudiño is interviewed extensively in the film, which will premiere at the FanTasia Film Festival in Montreal on July 28.

Sinister Seven: Van Gore filmmaker Keith Hodder

Certain members of the Rue Crew are still a-feudin’ over the main attractions of the Tarantino/Rodriguez Grindhouse double feature – Bowen and I aren’t allowed to “discuss” Death Proof in polite company anymore – but I think most of us can agree that the fake trailers were pretty damn rad. Thanks to the faux-trailer trend inspired by Grindhouse and projects like Joe Dante’s Trailers from Hell, vintage genre/exploitation trailers are finally getting the love they deserve.

Keith Hodder, Peter Strauss and Jerrad Pulham are the latest heirs to the faux-trailer throne thanks to Van Gore, winner of the Hobo with a Shotgun fake trailer contest. Their film, a gory, over-the-top homage to the violent shockers of the ’70s, was included with last week’s Hobo DVD and Blu-ray release, so it seemed like a good time to chat up Hodder about the fine art of trailer trash.

Elizabeth McGrath Gets Frankenstein’s Electrodes A-Buzzin’

As mentioned in the latest issue of Rue Morgue, Elizabeth McGrath – she being the creator of some pretty creepy, taxidermic creature art – also fronts a band called Miss Derringer, and lo if the sugary pop punk act doesn’t have a new video out this week for the song “Bulletproof Heart” from its latest album, Winter Hill. A hopelessly romantic Frankenstein tries to win over Miss McGrath as she parades around in skimpy outfits and I dare say I hardly blame the big lug.

Get Filthy With John Waters and Bloody With Tom Savini

With the 2011 Festival of Fear now only six weeks away, we’ve got two more amazing off-site events (read: legendary horror nights in the making) to announce!

The man William S. Burroughs once called “The Pope of Trash” – John Waters – is hosting a one-man “vaudeville” act celebrating his career, influences and fascination with true crime, exploitation films, fashion lunacy and the extremes of the contemporary art world, Saturday August 27 at the Toronto Underground Cinema (186 Spadina Ave.) 7 p.m. $35 door, $30 advance, or a $125 VIP ticket that includes post-performance reception. This joyously devious monologue elevates all that is trashy into a call-to-arms for Waters lovers everywhere!

Then, don’t miss Night Terrors, our Official 2011 Festival of Fear party, featuring a Midnight Costume Contest hosted by special fx/makeup guru Tom Savini and others, along with the hypnotic sounds of witch rock pioneers (and Hymns From the House of Horror Vol. II donors) Blood Ceremony. Plus! Terror tunes from one-man party Tomb Dragomir, Oz and LaMort. Saturday, August 27 at Revival Event Theatre (783 College St. West) 10 p.m. $15 door/$10 advance.

CRYPTIC COLLECTIBLES: FANGTASTIC NEW HAMMER HORROR MERCHANDISE PART 2!

As I reported here back in May, the good people at Titan Merchandise in England were getting ready to release a set of collectible busts this fall based on classic Hammer Horror characters. The set is comprised of three offerings: Christopher Lee in his signature role as the bloodthirsty Count Dracula (as seen in 1958′s Horror of Dracula), Peter Cushing as his adversary, the heroic Professor Van Helsing (from the same movie) and horror goddess Ingrid Pitt as the lovely, lethal Countess Elisabeth Nádasdy from the 1971 film, Countess Dracula.

Well, I’ve since been provided with some updated images of these fantastic collectibles and I thought I’d post them here for you to have a look.

RUE MORGUE PODCAST – THE HORROR COURT VERDICT REVEALED

Recently on the Rue Morgue Podcast, Rob Zombie’s The Devil’s Rejects was thrown before the mercy of the Horror Court.

Prosecuting the film on behalf of the crown was yours truly. Bravely defending it was Charlie Lawton from the Toronto Underground Cinema.

But it was up to you, the listeners, a.k.a. the judge, jury and executioners to determine its fate, to decide whether or not The Devil’s Rejects is GUILTY or NOT GUILTY of being a load of bloody codswallop!

So listen up. The verdict may take you by surprise!

Sinister Seven: Giovanni Lombardo Radice

From the clunky and scarred steel desk of frequent Audio Drome contributor Metal George Pacheco:

Most revered by fans as Italian horror’s whipping boy – due mainly to his numerous and grisly death scenes – veteran screen and stage actor Giovanni Lombardo Radice has starred in numerous, certified genre classics, the most notable being Lucio Fulci’s City of the Living Dead (a.k.a. Gates of Hell) and his debut with Ruggero Deodato, The House On the Edge of the Park, both released in 1980.

I set up a blinding light, shone it right in his face and demanded answers to seven sinister queries about his career, the early goings-on with the forthcoming House sequel, and exactly why the Italian film industry hit a wall and bit the dust back in the ’90s. Enjoy!
