STATEMENT OF HARRY WU
---- about Sujiatun issue
Harry Wu
JUNE 8, 2006

In March 2006, the members of Falun Gong planned an investigation of the "death camp" at Sujiatun in northeast China, where they claimed the Chinese government was secretly imprisoning Falun Gong practitioners and harvesting their organs while still alive for profit. However, this "Sujiatun Auschwitz" allegation was based on nothing more than the testimony of three “witnesses”.

I. Background information about the three unidentified “witnesses”

Anonymous witness No. 1

The No.1 witness has been given the alias “Peter”. Peter was a Chinese national who had worked as a reporter for a Japanese TV station. According to Peter he was arrested by the Shenyang State Security Department on Jan 28, 2006. On Feb 8, he was released on probation for medical treatment. The next day, Peter escaped to Japan by plane. He found that Japan was not safe enough for him and continued on to the United States.

Anonymous witness No. 2

The No.2 witness has been given the alias “Annie”. Annie introduced herself as a staff member at the Liaoning Provincial Thrombosis Hospital of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine and the former wife of a brain surgeon. Annie and her ex-husband left China in 2004. In 2006, Annie arrived in the US while her ex-husband went to Canada.

Anonymous witness No. 3

The No.3 witness was identified by the Falun Gong as "a veteran military doctor in the General Logistics Department of the Shenyang Military Region". There is no background information on him.

II. The three witness' testimonies and my analysis and opinion

A. Testimony excerpt from Annie

Part 1

At the time when we went to work there, the person in charge of logistics and purchasing in the hospital said that the quantity of disposable sterile gloves used for operations and daily supplies that the hospital authorities asked to be purchased had increased dramatically. The logistics people estimated based on the scale of purchases at that time that there were at least 6,000 Falun Gong practitioners detained in this hospital. (The Epoch Times, March 17, 2006)

Our hospital started to detain these Falun Gong practitioners in 2001. Many people were detained at that time in the local police stations and labor camps. Since those places already had many criminals, there were not many places to detain Falun Gong practitioners then. Therefore, Falun Gong practitioners were secretively transferred to some hospitals. At that time I did not know about it. Among the people I knew then, they also said about 5,000 Falun Gong practitioners were being detained at the Thrombosis Hospital. (The Epoch Times, April 20, 2006)

[Analysis & Opinion]

The witness did not see any prisoners there. The data comes from the witness's subjective feelings and coworker hearsay. Her statements have been found to be inconsistent.

Part 2

From 2001, our hospital started to detain Falun Gong practitioners. At the beginning, these people were detained in the single-storey houses in the back yard of the hospital. Later, the hospital authorities demolished the single-storey houses, and it was unknown where in the hospital the Falun Gong practitioners were transferred. Many staff of the hospital discussed in private that these Falun Gong practitioners had been secretly transferred to the underground chambers of the hospital. According to some people working inside the hospital, the hospital has a huge system of secret underground chambers. (The Epoch Times, March 17, 2006)

These Falun Gong practitioners were not detained in the 4-story building under the in-patient department and administration at the front of the hospital, in order to keep the hospital staff from seeing them at all. We only occasionally saw Falun Gong practitioners being sent on a mobile intensive care bed to the first floor for physical examinations. These people were very weak. For the majority of the Falun Gong practitioners, nobody knew where they were being secretly kept. (The Epoch Times, March 17, 2006)

[Analysis & Opinion]

In the three years Annie worked at the hospital, she have never been inside or saw these “secret underground chambers”. All of her comments are based on speculations, which are in the realm of inadmissible hearsay. Initial investigations have identified the site at Sujiatun as a hospital, where it is estimated that 2,000 Falun Gong practitioners have been kept, nowhere near the number claimed by the Falun Gong.

Part 3

Three-quarters of the 6,000 arrested Falun Gong practationers have died, having their hearts, kidneys, retinas, and skins harvested and their bodies disposed of …Since 2001, the concentration camp has secretly detained thousands of Falun Gong practitioners. The hospital removed their kidneys, livers, and corneas. After the organ removal, the emptied corpses were sold as models to the “Biological Plastic and Chemistry Factories” that sprung like mushrooms because of the sufficient supply of dead bodies and others were disposed of right on the spots. Investigations show that the organs were taking from the arrested Falun Gong practitioners alive. Due to the exceptional brutality, many participating medical staffs suffered from serious psychological problems and there have been reports that some medical workers committed suicide because of the mental pressure…The organs from the Falun Gong practitioners have become the main supply of China’s underground organ trade. (The Epoch Times, March 17, 2006)

[Analysis & Opinion]
If 4500 practitioners' organs are removed, then averagely 1500 each year and 120 each month will have their organs removed and then murdered. It is technically impossible and the actual environment of Sujiatun does not seem to allow such large scale operations. There is virtually no evidence but only an allegation.

Part 4

Question: Where are these organs usually sold? Do the higher authorities in the government know about this?

Answer: They are mainly sold to Thailand, but I believe they are also sold to other regions of the world. (The Epoch Times, March 17, 2006)

[Analysis & Opinion]

There is virtually no evidence that organs were sold to Thailand or any other countries. Thailand by law does not permit organ donation, unless the donation is to an immediate family member.

Part 5

My husband and I both worked at the Sujiatun hospital since 2001. He was one of the main surgeons in the concentration camp. He is a brain surgeon, and was mainly in charge of cornea removal. (The Epoch Times, April 20, 2006)

[Analysis & Opinion]

Is a brain surgeon capable of acting as a qualified cornea surgeon?

Part 6

At the end of 2003, when my husband stopped playing along and performing the hated

operations, an assassin was sent to knife him. I saved his life by jumping in the attacker's way, receiving the deep knife wounds on my right abdomen. We as sources traveled thousands of miles to come to the United States by just means. (The Epoch Times, April 26, 2006)

Ms. Annie's ex-husband is a late-stage cancer patient now, and is receiving chemotherapy in a hospital in Canada. He tried to escape from China, did not want to participate in the crime of harvesting Falun Gong practitioners' organs, and wanted to quit. He then was warned and threatened. His wife was stabbed deeply on the left side of her stomach when she tried to protect him. He is an orphan of a CCP martyr. He confessed to his wife, burned five deep marks onto his arm, and told her of his secrets. Anne stepped forward to help pay back her ex-husband's crimes. (The Epoch Times, April 21, 2006)

[Analysis & Opinion]

The assassination attempt on Annie's husband led to their escape from China, and then came the disclosure of “Sujiatun Auschwitz” in the US. Since the assassination was the catalyst for the following, Annie should disclose the details of the assassination attempt. Peter should also disclose how he received the details of the event.

B. Testimony excerpt from Peter

Part 1

In Sujiatun District, Shenyang City, the CCP has established a secret concentration camp, where over 6,000 Falun Gong practitioners are detained, said Mr. R. The concentration camp has a crematorium to dispose of bodies. There are also many doctors on site. No detainees have managed to leave the concentration camp alive. Before cremation, the internal organs are all removed from the bodies and sold. Now there are only a few Falun Gong practitioners at the Masanjia Labor Camp and Dabei Second Prison. Most of them have been moved to Sujiatun. Other practitioners from northeastern China and central China are also being transferred there. (The Epoch Times, March 9, 2006)

[Analysis & Opinion]

I don't think this report can be accepted as believable without having supporting evidence.

Part 2

I have worked as journalist in China for some time now, and have been exposing the situation of Falun Gong. Most of the people know that there is a Masanjia Labor Camp in Shenyang City, Liaoning Province, that there is a Dabei Second Prison near the Masanjia Labor Camp, and that there is a brainwashing center located in the Huanggu District Police Department. You may not know that there is another facility especially used to torture Falun Dafa practitioners in the Sujiatun District. Up until now, nobody has dared to do an interview to report this place.

Most prisons and labor camps have detainees going in and out, and eventually information will be brought out. But this Sujiatun Concentration Camp has not had anyone come out yet; therefore, the people outside find it very difficult to know what is happening inside. During my other interviews in Shenyang, I learned that there are very few Falun Dafa practitioners still detained in the Masanjia Labor Camp or in Dabei Prison, because they have been sent to this concentration camp in Sujiatun. (The Epoch Times, March 9, 2006)

[Analysis & Opinion]

There is no evidence that people have gone into “Sujiatun Concentration Camp” and not come out. It is very possible that in fact no one is going in at all.

Part 3

The Sujiatun Concentration Camp has steel gates that remain closed all the time. There is a three-meter high brick wall that has electric wire netting on top. No one can see in from outside, and people living nearby have said that this place is always tightly sealed. This is a secret prison, so you will see neither people (uniformed or not) nor vehicles coming in or out for two or three days at a time. (The Epoch Times, March 9, 2006)

[Analysis & Opinion]

“The secret prison” Peter described is different from what Annie says. No document, no evidence, again.

Part 4

If Falun Gong practitioners are sent to Sujiatun, I believe that they will never come out. What is the Chinese communist regime doing to them behind those walls? The Chinese regime would never feed and house them indefinitely. What many people probably do not know is that the CCP Political and Judiciary Committee system in the Shenyang City Area and Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture have learned many things from the Concentration Camps in North Korea.

I am sorry that I have to use such a direct way to speak such a fact, Falun Gong practitioners are killed for their organs, which are then sent to medical facilities. Currently, the organ business is a very profitable one in China.

Many patients that have died on operating tables have had their organs taken away. No one investigates it. Even doctors are involved in this trade. They cannot find enough bodies through executions, and no one is more readily available than practitioners to do this business. (The Epoch Times, March 9, 2006)

[Analysis & Opinion]

No evidence supporting this allegation, again only hearsay.

Part 5

In 2003, when the SARS epidemic was widespread in China, I traveled from Hong Kong, at the south end of the country, to Heilongjiang Province, at the north end, and witnessed the corruption and dirtiness of the CCP system. I contacted many officials in Shenyang City, Liaoning Province. Their ways of deceit, greed, illegal behavior are beyond the imagination and shockingly evil. The new and old policies that the Central Government has established, the government agencies, the Court system, and the power that is bestowed by the people are all sacrificed when these officials extort people's money. When I contacted these officials, I realized for the first time that an underground camp existed at Sujiatun.

However, it is very difficult to investigate a secret location in such a big city, and to prove its existence. In the past three years, I have consumed large amounts of manpower, material supplies, and financial resources, but have finally found this facility in Sujiatun, where many Falun Dafa practitioners were detained, and their cornea, organs, and bone marrow harvested live, and then their bodies cremated. Even their hair is made into wigs, and their skin and body fat is sold. The remainder of their bodies is then cremated to destroy all evidence. Ladies and gentlemen, can you believe that such crimes are still underway in other regions in China? (The Epoch Times, April 21, 2006)

[Analysis & Opinion]

Since the witness said “in the past three years, I have consumed large amounts of manpower, material supplies, and financial resources”, he should have persuasive evidence. However, the actual “evidence” is yet to be shown to the international community.

Part 6

I have collected information from websites of organ transplant centers in Tianjin City and Shenyang City in China. The advertising on these sites is aimed at attracting foreign patients to undergo live organ transplant operations in China, providing large quantities of organs.

On the English version of the website of the China International Transplant Network Assistance Center (CITNAC), it is posted that it only takes one week to one month to find a kidney match. Meanwhile in the United States, the waiting period is two years or longer. We all know that kidneys and other organs are very hard to keep fresh, with a window of only 24-48 hours for a kidney, and even shorter for a heart. It is clearly shown on the Tianjin City Eastern Organ Transplant Center website that transplant procedures have largely increased in frequency since 2001.

This crime is committed by a network of corporations and participants who steal and sell Falun Gong practitioners' organs. It involves guards in the labor camps, surgeons, nurses, the government officials of the public health system, police officials, central government officials, black market organ traders and overseas organ transplant traders. It is an enormous crime beyond our imagination. (The Epoch Times, April 21, 2006)

[Analysis & Opinion]

All the aforementioned websites are available to the Chinese and international public. If these websites' claims are true, they do not however prove that these organs are coming directly from Falun Gong practitioners.

C. Testimony excerpt from “A Shenyang military zone doctor”

Part 1

As many state regulations have stipulated, the top level of each provincial government has the authority to establish "recycling organizations" to process felons in the military zone under its jurisdiction. This practice is warranted by a legal document that the Chinese Communist Party's Central Military Commission established as early as 1962. This practice has never stopped to this day. According to the regulations in the document, death-penalty prisoners and felons may be processed according to the development needs of the state or of socialism. During the Great Cultural Revolution, the most extreme way to process these prisoners was to use their bodies for food. The second-most extreme way was to use them as slave labor for engineering or production work. (The Epoch Times, March 31, 2006)

[Analysis & Opinion]

The witness did not provide a copy of “the 1962 document”. He has not shown evidence that the practice of “using their bodies for food” and “establishing recycling organization” continues today.

Part 2

After a 1984 amendment, it became legal to harvest organs from felons. The police and judicial departments perform organ harvesting on living prisoners before cremating their bodies. Sometimes, they will injure the prisoners in a show execution before they perform organ harvesting on the injured prisoners. They then cremate their bodies.

Since 1992, such a practice has become public. Due to the development of many related businesses, human bodies have become profitable raw materials. Living human beings, as well as dead bodies, have become industrial raw materials.

Many crematoriums in China do not actually cremate the bodies after they receive them. Instead, these bodies are transferred elsewhere through secret tunnels. In many cases, the ashes given to the families of executed prisoners came from animals or from other people's bodies. Some of the bodies given to the families were even ancient Chinese people or victims of WWII. The actual bodies are sold at high prices to many different types of state-owned factories as raw materials for different products via many different channels. Nearly all the large crematoriums in China are engaged in such underground businesses. (The Epoch Times, March 31, 2006)

[Analysis & Opinion]

The witness did not provide a copy of “the 1984 amendment”. If as he says, “such a practice has become public” and “nearly all the large crematoriums in China are engaged in such underground businesses”, shouldn't these 'facts' be known by many more people besides himself?

Part 3

The Chinese Communist Party has openly declared Falun Gong to be the "class enemies," turning Falun Gong practitioners into the target of its most severe suppression. In other words, the Chinese Communist Party has declared Falun Gong practitioners to be felons. The so-called hospitals in Sujiatun are but one of 36 similar concentration camps all over China. At present, the majority of detained Falun Gong practitioners are in prisons, forced labor camps, and detention centers. They are transferred elsewhere on a large scale only when special occasions call for it. Heilongjiang, Jilin, and Liaoning provinces imprison the largest number of Falun Gong practitioners. The concentration camp in Jiutai Area, Jilin Province is the 5th-largest camp imprisoning Falun Gong practitioners in China. This camp alone detains over 14,000 Falun Gong practitioners. (The Epoch Times, March 31, 2006)

[Analysis & Opinion]

The claim that “36 similar concentration camps” exist is unfounded. No evidence or witnesses exist to support this statement. My associates traveled to Jiutai and our investigations found a Jiutai Laojiao Center which houses 800 inmates, of which only 200 of the prisoners are Falun Gong practitioners.

Part 4

Based on information I have access to, the largest concentration camp is in Jilin Province. This concentration camp, codenamed 672-S, imprisons over 120,000 people. A large number of Falun Gong practitioners, felons, and prisoners of conscience from all over China are there, but I do not know its address. (The Epoch Times, March 31, 2006)

[Analysis & Opinion]

Without concrete and substantiated evidence, such reports are not credible.

Part 5

In the so-called underground concentration camp of the Sujiatun District Hospital, there were indeed over 10,000 people kept there in early 2005, but at the present time, the number of detainees there is maintained at 600-750. Many detainees have been transferred to other concentration camps. (The Epoch Times, March 31, 2006)

Part 6

It takes no more than a day to transfer 5,000 people in a closed freight train on a special route. I have witnessed a specially dispatched freight train transferring over 7,000 people in one trip from Tianjin to the Jilin area. It ran at night, guarded by the Chinese army. Everyone on the train was handcuffed to specially designed handrails on top of the ceiling like rotisserie chickens. (The Epoch Times, March 31, 2006)

[Analysis & Opinion]

Without concrete and substantiated evidence, such reports are not credible. Also, the description of “underground concentration camp” is in conflict with what Peter and Annie said. I spent 19 years as a political prisoner in China’s forced labor camps and have experienced many transfers. No transfer occurred like the one described.

III. Conclusion

1) No concrete or substantiated evidence, such as documents or photos, have been provided to support the witness’ statements.

2) Both Annie and Peter, who are now in the US, refuse to reveal their real names despite that fact that they no longer reside in China. This makes it difficult for the international community to corroborate their testimonies and makes their statements less strong. Since they claim to have knowledge about thousands of people whose lives may be in danger it is essential that they be more open about who they are and what they know.

3) The claim that Falun Gong practitioners' live organs are being harvested is diverting attention from real, substantiated facts. China has been harvesting organs from executed prisoners for more than 20 years and this has been proven. This is an issue that the Falun Gong never mentions, and its allegations about live harvesting or reverse-organ donations remain unconfirmed.

4) The Chinese Communist Government is an evil regime that commits many atrocities including the persecution of the Falun Gong. However, the logic does follow that because the government has outlawed the spiritual group it has created Sujiatun and other concentration camps to kill and harvest the organs of live Falun Gong practitioners. Without proof this is not logical reasoning.

5) Those who doubt the existence of Sujiatun, including myself, should not be criticized as “obstacles to the investigation” or be accused of “cooperating with Beijing”.

6) Today, there is not much national or international attention to the Sujiatun issue. This does not imply that the international community does not value human rights. Nor does it mean that the world has been pressured by Beijing to remain silent, or that is has taken the side of the Communist regime. When I received Falun Gong’s report, I personally arranged for Sujiatun to be investigated right away, include the hospital, Kangjiasan Prison and Jiutai Laojiao Camp. Officers and staff from the US embassy in Beijing and the US Consulate in Shenyang visited the Sujiatun site two times. Overseas media also sent reporters to investigate the case. These actions show that people treated the Sujiatun issue very seriously. However, the Falun Gong claims that "Sujiatun Auschwitz" exists have yet to substantiate and appear to be nothing more than political propaganda.
