2001 Census

Samples of Anonymised Records (SARs)

The three UK Census Offices (General Register Office for Scotland, Office for National Statistics and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency) agreed to provide samples of the 2001 Census data for research.

Three different samples were produced:

  • A 3% individual SAR for the UK.
  • A 1% special licence household SAR (England and Wales only).
  • A 5% small area microdata (SAM) SAR for the UK.

The lowest level of geography available in the individual SAR is Government Office Region (GOR) level while the small area microdata SAR contains detail at local authority level.

More detailed versions of the 3% individual SAR and the 1% household SAR, both covering the whole of the UK, can be accessed in a safe setting at the Office for National Statistics (ONS). These files are currently available for use at ONS offices in Titchfield, London, Newport and Southport.

More details on how to obtain access to the SARs can be obtained from the Cathy Marsh Centre for Census and Survey Research.
