Chapter 2: Career
Author: Alastair Campbell Date: August 2010
I started off as a journalist, which I kind of drifted into, I worked very closely with John Smith and once I got in to journalism I thought I would stay there for life. But then things happen and John Smith died, Neil Kinnock stepped down as Labour leader, Tony Blair became Labour leader and he asked me to work for him. I know Tony a little and when he asked me i didn’t quite understand why because I was political but never wanted to become an MP, but it turned out that he wanted me to work on the communication and press side of the government.
I never thought for one second that I would end up in politics, I have always been left of centre, so my political home would always be the Labour Party, and I got to know Neil Kinnock very well through being a journalist and going to party conferences, so when Tony took over I think he thought I would be a good fit in what he wanted to achieve.
