Teddybears,Devil's Music
Teddybears traffic in unbelievably stupid music. This is supposed to be the twaddle that enslaves your average TV watcher (say, the type who made Dirty Vegas’ “Days Go By” a weirdly sizeable hit back in 2002) and villainously prevents the populace from hearing the “real” and “good” music. But the irony is that no one actually likes Teddybears. Like, 2006’s “Cobrastyle” was in a few commercials and Robyn covered it, so people googled and downloaded the stray song or few, but there...

Admiration for Limp Bizkit is just about the only thing that Dutch people and the lowest common denominator of Americans will ever, ever have in common. That said, I am neither of these things, which makes it personally disturbing that I just listened to Durst and company's latest offering, Gold Cobra, for an extended period of time. While the Dutch (I can only assume) revel in the Jacksonville, Florida native's otherness, people from Jacksonville and comparable places revel in the opposite...

It’s easy to see why the people of England and Ireland fell under the spell of Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, and Elvis back in the day, especially with 20/20 hindsight. The overly contained and highly proper Brits and the dour Irish must have found the gyrations of the first generation rockabilly cats impossible to comprehend. They were like people from another planet—snarling, sneering, sexual outlaws who would do anything to make an impression...

This isn’t a secret, but there are no uniformly great crews in hip-hop. Or anywhere really; wondering out loud, what’s the largest number of consistently great songwriters who’ve ever been in one place? There’s only one in Belle and Sebastian, Wu-Tang Clan divides out to maybe half, and all of the Beatles did their best work in the Beatles. Odds are not in Odd Future’s favor, with many reviewers declaring the polarizing Tyler, the Creator over already, their by-consensus best rapper Earl Sweatshirt...

Let’s talk about lo-fi. The lo-fi aesthetic is generally faced with two options of necessity: 1. Operating on a shoestring budget, which leads to the necessity of being shrewd and resourceful with your assets. Example: tUnE-yArDs, whose astounding BiRd-BrAiNs debut used its squashed audio space to the absolute maximum, squeezing in color wherever possible from dishes, forks, extra vocal overdubs—anything to rebuke the idea that her recording might be worth less because of its meager...

Bush is Back With First New Album in 10 Years
Radio-friendly British alt-rockers Bush spent most of the 00′s in splitsville following a largely triumphant streak in the ’90s. They each kept busy: One phased through the reunited Helmet; one landed a few small parts in big movies; one hung out with his family, etc. But they’re back, and they’re putting all that dilly-dallying behind them with a very forward-looking LP called The Sea of Memories, which they’ve announced will be released this September 13th. In the meantime, the band is slated to perform the album’s lead single “The Sound of Winter” for a mid-summer episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” (July 21st), plus one show at the Bowery Ballroom in NYC (which reportedly sold out in under a minute) and a headlining spot at LA’s Sunset Strip Music Fest in August.
The Sea of Memories will be Bush’s first new album since 2001′s Golden State, which was a considerable hit back in the day and included the single “The People That We Love”, which managed to climb as high as #10 on the mainstream rock chart despite being released just one week after 9/11. (In fact the song was originally called “Speed Kills”, though they changed the name out of sensitivity for the victims.) The band does not intend to rest on its laurels, however. ”When making music, you have a choice to repeat what you’ve done or move on. It would’ve been safe to just rework [Bush's 1994 debut album] Sixteen Stone over and over, but what kind of life would that be?” singer-guitarist Gavin Rossdale has stated. “When you’re driving down the road, you’re focused on what’s in front of you; you don’t really think to keep checking in your rear view mirror. I like the idea of art changing, developing and morphing.” So, they’re never looking back, rocketing ever forward, full steam ahead with The Sea of MEMORIES? Dude—come on.
Since the new album hits just two days after the 10th anniversary of 9/11, it could well be those memories to which the upcoming title alludes. Either way, the album was recorded with producer Bob Rock (who might yet inspire me to change my name to Howard Criticism), and will be the first album released by the band’s own new record label, Zuma Rock Records, in association with eOne Music. Below take a stroll down future-happening lane with the official video for “The People That We Love”.
