Bad Science: the missing index

Bad Science by Ben Goldacre is probably the finest book published last year. But it has one big flaw – no index. There’s a vast amount of information in it, but without an index it’s obviusly very difficult to look anything specific up.

Therefore I have created an unofficial index for it. See below for the online searchable version.

I have also created a Word doc version which is better formatted and will fit in the book! Download it here

See bottom of post for caveats and so forth.

***Important: This is an unofficial index which has been created without the knowledge or permission of the author of the book, Ben Goldacre, or the publishers, so any errors are entirely my own. Indeed if it represents any kind of copyright infringement, then someone better let me know. However, I would hope the publishers would take the view that this, if anything, promotes the book and would generate interest in it’s content. That would be my hope, anyway.

Anyone else can link to this or the Word Doc download. If you choose to distribute it yourself, it would be nice to get a mention as it was a fair bit of work!

Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you spot any errors, corrections or have any suggestions for improvement, this is very much a first draft!

  3. Derek says:

this is a very impressive index – especially if as advertised from an amateur – BUT -a pro could improve on it. e.g. entries starting with ‘The’ do not help much

    • olifreke says:

      Hi Derek,

Thanks for your thoughts; I am indeed an amateur book indexer and make no claims as to it’s brilliance. It was really just to help me look up things and am happy to make corrections for the benefit of the greater good.

I did do some research on the ‘the’ question, and it it seems to be an area of debate in the world of indexing. It is apparently acceptable to present either ‘Daily Mail, The’, or ‘The Daily Mail’ (although of course The Daily Mail itself is in no way acceptable!), and it’s largely up to the indexer to decide which they prefer. If the ‘The’ is part of the title, then it should be indexed that way, eg ‘The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe’, and I tend to think of the newspapers as ‘The Guardian’, ‘The Times’, etc, and by sorting on ‘the’ means all the papers are handily gathered together.

I guess if I was being thorough, I could duplicate the entries as ‘Guardian, The’, ‘Times, The’, etc and who knows perhaps I will!

  4. Gillian says:

Well it’s better than the one that came with the book!

  5. Maureen MacGlashan says:

Glenda Browne (Ig Nobel award for literature for her article on indexing “The” at http://www.theindexer.org/files/22-3/22-3_119.pdf says

“When filing a title ‘The’ goes at the end

And you start with a lower-case letter

But an index of first lines puts ‘the’ at the front

Somehow they think that works better.

For corporate bodies ‘the’s’ often left out

It’s part of the name but it has not much clout

But in place names the ‘the’ is important to show

You must trust the rules, for surely they know!”
