Hong Kong Mak Mun Kee wonton noodles

Mak Mun Kee Noodle House – probably my favourite restaurant in Hong Kong. Discovered the place in 2007, visited twice again during the recent trip.

Hong Kong Mak Mun Kee wonton noodles restaurant

Mak Mun Kee is famous for its wonton noodles and pig trotters. Its shrimp wontons are huge, fresh, with bouncy texture and great flavour. Loved the pig trotters too, which are simmered with red-fermented tofu, a Chinese speciality.

The restaurant will still be on top of my list when I visit Hong Kong next time.

Mak Mun Kee is located at 51, Parkes Street, Jordan.

Apparently the bizarre delicacy has a pretty long history in Dongyang City. But it’s making national headlines recently as it was discovered by some folks that the street food has been listed as one of the city’s cultural heritage.

Subway is world’s largest restaurant chain

Subway sandwichSubway has surpassed McDonald’s as the world’s largest restaurant chain in terms of units. Subway had 33,749 restaurants around the globe at the end of 2010, while McDonald’s had 32,737.

Subway is not popular in Asia, only 1000+ of its outlets are in this region, less than 5% of its total units which are spread across 95 countries.

Its spokesperson has named India and China among its high growth nations, but it remains to be seen if they could survive in long run. Culturally Asians have yet to accept sandwich or burger as staple food.

And the idea of eating healthily – which Subway is famous for – works only in a few places in this part of the world. Pricing and taste prevail.

West Japan nostalgic vending machine tour

A Japanese guy [YT] spent two weeks in July 2010 travelling across West Japan and sampling food (mostly noodles) from various old-style vending machines

Only a few of the 70+ items look appetising to be frank. The price of each item is shown on the top banner in the video, ranging around 250-350 yen, which is about 3-4 USD; I think it’s considered cheap by Japanese standard.

Taste of Harmony – Bibimbap commercial

A commercial for iconic Korean food, bibimbap, has been on display in New York City’s Time Square since late November…

The commercial is created by the producers of Infinite Challenge, a popular Korean variety show. It cleverly introduces a variety of Korean culture which ‘merged’ harmoniously into a colourful bowl of bibimbap.
