Anggun Cipta Sasmi was born in April 1974 in Djakarta, Indonesia and became a professional singer at age nine, later coming under the tutelage of producer Ian Antono, with whom she recorded six best-selling pop metal albums. Though she was the best-known and most commercially successful musician in her homeland, Anggun was unknown outside Indonesia until the mid 1990s when she moved to Paris to seek an international audience. Hooking up with producer/songwriter Erick Benzi, Anggun released her U.S. debut album, Snow on the Sahara in 1998, a fusion of Indonesian music and Western pop. The title song became an instant #1 hit in Spain, Italy and Eastern Asia, while being charted Top 5 in the Club Charts in the United Kingdom. Her second album, Chrysalis, became Gold in Italy in one week and reached multi-Gold and multi-Platinum in numerous countries across Asia. In 2003, France's Culture Minister presented her with the prestigious Diamond Award for selling more than 1.2 million copies abroad, making her one of the best selling French music export success stories ever. A year later, she received the distinction of "Chevalier des Arts et Lettres" for her worldwide achievements and for her support of French culture.
