Worth noting that the term maverick โ€“ which came to describe independent mindedness โ€“ was derived from the name of Texas rancher Samuel Maverick. Given that most cattle in the 1860′s were branded, Maverick chose to identify his stock by their absence of these branded markings. More recently Japanese retailers Muji have excelled in ‘no-brand’ designs and maverick minimalism.
