Smart Grid is one of the hot topics lately (with articles in EE Times, Ars Technica, GigaOm or CNET) in part because of the $4.5B for Smart Grid projects allocated to the Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability (part of the US Department of Energy) by the US government stimulus package.
The DoE expects to award the first round of funds during 4Q2009.
As the funding will be distributed between the proposals based on a competitive grant process, only the organizations that are best prepared with products or proposals with clear advantages for Smart Grid applications will succeed. Projects that want to benefit from stimulus funds will need to demonstrate that they use reliable and field-tested technologies to ensure they make an effective use of tax-payer money.

DS2's offering for Smart Grid applications includes the MONTGO chipset and the AITANA chipset. MONTGO can operate with PHY data rates up to 100 Mbps and AITANA can go up to 200 Mbps (ready for tomorrow's real-time SmartGrid applications). Both include an embedded network processor running a full TCP/IP stack that can be configured for a variety of IP-based applications using DS2's Software Development Kit (SDK).
