A SCI-FI knifeman caught with a "Star Trek sword" in a Teesside street has been jailed.
David Hellen appeared at Teesside Crown Court for sentencing yesterday, having previously pleaded guilty to possession of an offensive weapon, as reported.
Police were called on July 5 to Lennox Crescent, Billingham, following a report of a man with a weapon and on arrival found Hellen, 29, with the knife.
Photographs of the weapon - described on the charge sheet as a "multi-bladed sword" - sparked bemusement in the courtroom.
Rachel Dyson, defending, said: "I understand it was a Star Trek bat'leth sword."
Judge Brian Forster QC jailed Hellen, of Brendon Crescent, Billingham, for 13 weeks and ordered the forfeiture and destruction of the knife.
The official Star Trek website describes a bat'leth as "the traditional 'sword of honour' preferred by Klingon warriors adept at the martial arts", like a two-ended scimitar.
