McNabb is too good for Philly

Updated: 01/21/09 6:52 AM

The Philadelphia Eagles said Monday that quarterback Donovan McNabb will return next season. He has two years left on his contract, so they have no reason to get rid of him.

UB’s Pierce receives high praise

Updated: 01/28/09 7:12 AM

Geno Ford is well-schooled on the modern-day history of Mid- American Conference basketball. He was the point guard on Ohio’s 1994 NCAA Tournament team. He spent three years as an assistant coach at his alma mater, another four years as an assistant at Kent State. And now he’s the head coach of the Golden Flashes, who last week paid their annual visit to Buffalo.

How much will you pay for success?

Updated: 01/23/09 6:24 AM

Maybe they held the line on ticket prices because they foresee no change in their current budget, or as a concession to the staggering economy. Maybe they retained the status quo because they sense that the backlash over head coach Dick Jauron left them no other choice. The reason is immaterial. What matters is that a ticket to a Buffalo Bills home game — at least the ones played in Orchard Park — remains one of the premier values in major pro sports.

Some officials are prepared to fight the good fight

Updated: 01/25/09 7:05 AM

MONTREAL — Commissioner Gary Bettman delivered his requisite bushel of good news during his state of the game address Saturday, which has become an annual snoozer. A few teams need money, but they’ll survive. The revenue stream is flowing at a slower rate because of the economy, but the league will be fine.

Bucky Gleason: Roy giving the Sabres full value

Updated: 01/14/09 8:05 AM

Here’s a little pop quiz to challenge your hockey knowledge: Which player began the week leading the NHL in points this year? Why, it was Sabres center Derek Roy, of course, who has five goals and nine points in five games in 2009. He entered Tuesday night’s games tied with Pavel Datsyuk and Martin St. Louis for the league high in January.

Updike wrote prose for the ages

Updated: 01/29/09 6:37 AM

Like many writers who came of age in the 1970s, I was in awe of John Updike. I devoured his “Rabbit” novels, which followed a former basketball star on his difficult journey through adulthood. I treasured his short stories, wishing for a day when I might write one-tenth as well.

Brownschidle keeps cancer in check

Updated: 01/26/09 7:00 AM

John Brownschidle says he really wasn’t afraid. In fact, if not for the scars on his body from the surgeries, the whole experience of fighting cancer last summer would seem like some dream, like something that happened to someone else.

Early finish reason to pop the cork

Updated: 10/31/08 6:46 AM

PHILADELPHIA — There was something very different about being in the Phillies’ clubhouse ducking all the flying champagne Wednesday night. (Memo to self: Standing in a media scrum right next to Brad Lidge is a sure way to get soaked).

Coste writes a new chapter to his impressive story

Updated: 10/26/08 7:40 AM

PHILADELPHIA — You want the feel-good story of this World Series? I know the national media is properly making a big deal about 45-year-old Jamie Moyer. This corner, however, feels totally provincial about Chris Coste.

Surprise! Few saw Rays, Phillies coming

Updated: 10/21/08 5:22 PM

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — I was here for the first game in the history of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. I’ve never seen a baseball game in Tropicana Field since. That will change come Wednesday night, when the Rays (minus the Devil) meet the Philadelphia Phillies in Game One of the World Series. What an odd cycle.

Ramirez ranks with the best

Updated: 02/01/09 6:54 AM

My interest is always piqued when I hear baseball fans discuss Manny Ramirez. “Flake” emerges as a term used to describe Manny, no doubt intended to diminish him and his stature in the game. By chance, my neighbors and I had the occasion to see what was Manny’s final game as a Red Sox in Fenway Park last July against the L. A. Angels. During a seventh inning pitching change, Manny once again opened the door and entered the Green Monster, we assumed to make a deposit. It was, however, his final act of defiance toward a Red Sox organization. He was traded two days later to the L. A. Dodgers. That exchange led to a complete team turnaround for the Dodgers.

Border brawl was a good one

Updated: 02/01/09 6:54 AM

The annual “Border Brawl,” which was held Jan. 21 at Clarence High School between the hometown Red Devils wrestling team (ranked No. 3 in WNY Large Schools) versus their neighbors to the south, Lancaster High School (ranked No. 1), truly is one of the highlights of my winter high school sports spectating calendar.

Losman compares well with Edwards

Updated: 02/01/09 6:54 AM

Before J. P. Losman leaves the Buffalo Bills organization forever, let’s take one last look at comparing him in his first full NFL season as a starter and Trent Edwards’ first full season as a starter. In the 2006 season Losman had a 62.5 completion percentage. This year Edwards’ completion percentage was 66.5. Losman had 19 TDs and 14 interceptions, Edwards had 11 TDs and 10 INTs. J. P. threw for 3,051 yards, Edwards threw for 2,699 yards. Losman’s QB rating was 84.9. This year, Trent’s QB rating was 85.4.
