J-Ideas announces fund-raising campaign

Warren Watson, director, announced today the creation of an annual fund-raising campaign to support J-Ideas, Ball State’s scholastic journalism and First Amendment institute.

Parties are invited to give $25 or more to the J-Ideas Foundation to support future activities of the program. Donations are tax deductible. <more>

with School Principals launched at Ball State

Ball State’s First Amendment institute has launched a landmark research project with 5,000 high school principals nationwide.

J-Ideas, a 5-year-old effort to support student journalism and First Amendment awareness, is reaching out to 5,000 principals to gauge their knowledge level and support for the First Amendment of the Constitution. The research coincides with Sunshine Week, a national effort to support Freedom of Information, an important principle of the First Amendment. <more>

The DVDs cover topics dealing with the First Amendment, business reporting, sports journalism, high school publications and principal and administrator issues. Thanks to the generosity of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and Ball State University, shipping costs are added to the total price of DVD orders.

 

 
  • Our Living History: A Celebration of our Constitution – This Silver Telly award-winning teaching DVD about the First Amendment is available to anyone interested in promoting education about the Constitution. It is a perfect curriculum tool for Constitution Day teaching! The DVD includes a history and background on the Constitutional and First Amendment, a panel discussion with constitutional experts, information about a national survey of student attitudes about the First Amendment and interviews with First Amendment Center founder John Siegenthaler and others about the importance of the First Amendment.

It highlights major points of a panel discussion comprising of professional business journalists who discussed the role of business and its potential for college and high school journalists. Learn from these national experts on how commerce and financial issues touch all our lives, and pick up tips for your classroom.
  • Sports Journalism: A New Era – This sports DVD follows a two-day symposium that examined sports writing and the profession’s goals for the future. The DVD features sports journalism experts from newspapers, magazines and television.
  • A First Amendment Guide for Principals and Administrators – This Silver Telly award-winning DVD was developed as part of J-IDEAS’ initiative to help principals and administrators create first Amendment awareness in schools. The DVD features highlights from school administrators and journalism educators, and provides insight on the role administrators play in working with student media. In addition, the DVD explains principals’ attitudes as reflected in the national First Amendment study, the importance of relationship building between principals and journalism advisers, an overview of court cases that have shaped the First Amendment and finding new ways to develop public relations in schools. The DVD also features separate commentaries from a school administrator and principal on First Amendment rights in a high school setting.

Free Speech 3.0: Student Expression in the Digital Age – J-IDEAS worked with the McCormick Tribune Foundation, a nonprofit organization committed to making life better for our children, communities and country, in conceiving, developing and carrying out the Free Speech in Schools conference, “Free Speech 3.0: Student Expression in the Digital Age,” as part of the McCormick Tribune Conference Series. From this, a booklet was created as a quick resource guide to First Amendment issues for students, parents, teachers, administrators and anyone else who cares about freedom of speech in high school. Principal’s Guide to Scholastic Journalism – Quill and Scroll Foundation, founded with the idea of recognizing scholastic journalism programs, has published “Principal’s Guide to Scholastic Journalism,” a booklet that addresses the value and importance of these programs in high schools today. This booklet helps to provide the guidelines for a healthy and prosperous atmosphere in which all scholastic journalism activities in today’s high school may function.
