Vital Stats
College: Colgate University, 1999 (Hamilton, NY)
College Degree:
B.A. History, magna cum laude
On 1994 Adonal Foyle made the unorthodox decision to attend Colgate, a small liberal arts college in upstate New York, rather than one of the traditional basketball schools. In his statement to the press, he explained that he wanted the opportunity to learn the principles of the game in a slower paced setting, where the coach would be able to give him the attention he desired. Foyle also wanted to leave college with a strong academic grounding, and felt that this would be harder to accomplish at a school where you were a basketball player first and a student last.

Adonal Foyle, or "Freddy" as he was known by his Colgate teammates, averaged 20.4 points, 12.7 rebounds and 5.66 blocks a game in his three-year college career (he left Colgate after his junior year). His 492 career blocks are an NCAA record - 11 more than Tim Duncan, the first overall pick in the 1997 NBA draft, and 39 more than Alonzo Mourning, both of whom played four years in the NCAA. Foyle is the third player in NCAA history to accumulate 1700 points, 1000 rebounds and 450 blocked shots in a career. He also posted four career triple-doubles, had six games with 10 or more blocks. Adonal was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Year and the first freshman to ever earn First Team All-Patriot League honors. As a sophomore he was named the Patriot League's Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, and was named the 1996 Patriot League Player of the Year during his junior year. Adonal was also a finalist for the John R. Wooden Player of the Year Award and the All-American team, and named Second All Team All-America by the US Basketball Writers Association, First Team All-Conference, USBWA District II Player of the Year, and First Team GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-America during his junior year.

At the end of his junior year, Adonal made the difficult decision to leave Colgate early and enter the NBA draft.

Although Adonal successfully made it into the NBA that year, he did not give up on his dream of becoming a college graduate. He continued working on his degree while playing in the NBA, and graduated two years later from Colgate University in 1999, Magna Cum Laude, with a degree in History.
