"Madlib Medicine Show No. 1: Before The Verdict"

One of my favorite producers/beat makers is Madlib. In 2010 Madlib has started a series, "Madlib Medicine Show". This series will consist of twelve volumes, one a month, released through Stones Throw/Madlib Invasion.

With me planning on following this series faithfully, picking up each volume the day its released, I've decided to do a review of each volume here on the site. So, I'll start with last month's volume (I picked up volume two today and will write a review on it within the next week after giving it a listen, as well as another Madlib produced album; "Miles Away" by The Last Electro-Acoustic Space Jazz & Percussion Ensemble). So here we go...

Madlib Medicine Show No. 1: Before The Verdict is somewhat of a prelude to the Madlib & Guilty Simpson album, "O.J. Simpson", which will also be released on Stones Throw. The album, Medicine Show, is comprised of Madlib remixes of tracks from Guilty Simpson's debut album "Ode To The Ghetto", with a few new/unreleased track mixed in. 17 tracks of Madlib production with features from M.E.D. and J Dilla.

One thing, besides the music, that I like about this album is the way that Madlib throws in audio from various comedian performances, namely Richard Pryor and Red Fox. This adds some comedy to the album, as with a lot of other Madlib albums.

Back to the music... I personally feel that this is for fans of Guilty Simpson who have heard, and liked, "Ode To The Ghetto" since 90% of the tracks are remixes from that album. But at the same time, fans of Madlib production will also enjoy this. Its everything you expect from a Madlib produced album; 60's & 70's Soul and Jazz samples, Madlib's use of string samples (which is something personally love), and movie samples integrated into the beats.

There isn't much to say about this album since its really just a remix album, but if you're interested I suggest you pick up both this and Guilty Simpson's "Ode To The Ghetto", and get prepared for "O.J. Simpson" (All Madlib production and Guilty Simpson lyrics, how can you go wrong?).

Below is one of my favorite tracks from the album. Check it out, might make you want to go pick it up. You can purchase it from the Stones Throw Store here.

Next I'll be reviewing "Madlib Medicine Show No. 2: Flight To Brazil" as well as "Miles Away" by The Last Electro-Acoustic Space Jazz & Percussion Ensemble, which is produced by Madlib.

Keep supporting me! Spread the word about the site!
