Washington Post: Markey, Barton ask for information on Groupon’s privacy policy

Following a Washington Post report, Reps. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) and Joe Barton (R-Tex.) have sent a letter to Groupon asking for more information on changes it made to its privacy policy to share demographics, social and geolocation data with its business partners.


“According to the article, Groupon will dramatically expand the categories of personal information it collects and shares with its partners,” Markey and Barton wrote. “As co-chairmen of the bi-partisan Congressional Privacy Caucus, we would like to gain greater insight into Groupon’s privacy policies.”

Top Democrats on the House Energy and Commerce and Judiciary committees are urging federal regulators to take a hard look at AT&T's plan to purchase T-Mobile, saying the deal could discourage investment and restrict innovation.


House Energy and Commerce Communications and Technology Subcommittee Chairman Anna Eshoo, D-Calif., Rep. Ed Markey, D-Mass., and House Judiciary Ranking Member John Conyers, D-Mich., sent a letter Wednesday to the heads of the Federal Communications Commission and Justice Department.

Would you trade your flat-screen HDTV for a black-and-white set with aluminum foil rabbit ears? How about swapping your smartphone for a rotary-dial brick?


Of course not — but that is what House Republicans would essentially have us do with our light bulbs, by eliminating minimum energy-efficiency standards put into place in a bill signed by President George W. Bush in 2007.


Consumer and environmental groups have joined with lighting manufacturers to denounce the move. They know that new compact florescent technology and advanced incandescent bulbs are already being produced that meet the standards in a way that creates jobs and helps consumers save $12 billion annually.


MetroWest Daily News: Markey Proposes New Stamp to Raise Funds for Alzheimer's Research

Congressman Ed Markey introduced a resolution Thursday recommending issuance of a stamp to help raise money for Alzheimer’s disease research.


On the 46th anniversary of the signing of the Older Americans Act, Markey, who co-chairs the Alzheimer’s Taskforce, said proceeds from sales of an Alzheimer’s-themed stamp would help fund research at the National Institutes of Health.
