Brief Description:
Building on its 19th century origins as a distinctive women’s college, the Winthrop University of the 21st century is achieving national prominence as a competitive and distinctive, coeducational, public, comprehensive institution. The values of service, excellence, diversity, community, and leadership provide the foundation for Winthrop’s continuing development and shape the university’s continuing success.
Winthrop enrolls an achievement-oriented, culturally diverse and socially responsible student body of around 6,000 students. The university recruits South Carolina’s most able students as well as highly qualified students from beyond the state whose presence adds diversity and enrichment to the campus and the state. Winthrop prides itself on being an institution of choice for groups traditionally under-represented on many college campuses.

- President Anthony DiGiorgio came to Winthrop in July 1989 as
the college’s ninth president. He is the longest serving president of the state’s
public universities and second-longest serving president at Winthrop. Founding
President D.B. Johnson served 42 years.
- In 1990, DiGiorgio; created the Vision of Distinction, a blueprint of goals
that are revised annually to reflect the work of the university.
Some of the
university’s other notable accomplishments include:
- A designation change from Winthrop College to Winthrop University in 1992;
- The institution’s first
capital campaign from 1998-2003, raising $31.2 million for scholarships, academic program
enhancements, and faculty development and research opportunities;
- An impressive $120+ million
in capital building projects that have adapted the university’s historic campus to
contemporary needs. The following buildings have been added: Culp Chiller
Plant, Dalton Hall to house life sciences, Courtyard residence hall, Owens Hall
classroom building, West Center for wellness and physical education classes,
Carroll Hall for business classes and most recently, the DiGiorgio Campus
Center.
