INTIMATE PARTNER ABUSE OF MEN

Research Report Released

In partnership with the Family and Domestic Violence Unit, MAN established a steering committee to investigate the extent and nature of intimate partner abuse of men.  Lotterywest provided a grant to undertake this research. Professor Alfred Allen and Dr Greg Dear of the School of Psychology at Edith Cowan University were selected as the research partners to undertake the study.

The report was launched on 26 May 2010 plus a workshop for service providers on the implications of the study was held during International Men’s Health Week on 16 June 2010.

  • Qualitative and Quantitative Research

Some people have questioned the validity of the methodology of the study, in particular, the small number of victims who were interviewed in phase one.  This was the qualitative phase and after interviewing 15 male victims, saturation was reached.  That is, no new themes had been identified by the last few interviews.  The researchers deemed that there was no point in continuing to interview more victims as nothing new would be gained.

The results of the survey of 198 service providers are relevant to any agency with an interest in providing services to, or dealing with, males experiencing violence from an intimate female partner.

    Words That Cut Deep

A poignant poem titled ‘Words that cut deep’ by a male victim of spousal abuse.

Inside I’m dying, wanting to do what is right. Knowing that no matter what I do it won’t be enough. It’s never enough. My body has failed me and my mind is confused. Sickness has ravaged my being, causing me to be unable to do what I once took for granted.”  To read the poem: Words That Cut Deep
