CAREER comeback No.2. Britney Spears is to make her first live appearance since that memorably disasterous Gimme More comeback attempt at the MTV Video Music Awards last year.

Spears, 26, left Los Angeles yesterday to promote her new album, Circus, in Europe and will perform live at the Bambi Awards in Düsseldorf, Germany, on Thursday (AEST).

The former pop princess' life was "out-of-control" when she appeared on MTV to try and revive her career, which has fallen dramatically since the enormous popularity of her debut album, Baby One More Time, in 1999, which revived teenage pop music.

Her performance on the MTV Video Music Awards was panned by critics who slammed her singing, dancing, costume choice and weight.

The catastrophic comeback marked a year in which Spears shaved her head as photographers looked on, was cited for "habitual'' use of controlled substances and alcohol by the judge in the custody case of her children Sean Preston and Jayden James.

Her former husband, Kevin Federline, was granted sole custody of the children last October due to her mental state and drug abuse.

But Spears, the eighth best-selling female recording artist in the US, has sought redemption. She has cleaned up her appearance, her health seems to have improved, she has appeared on TV and with Madonna on stage and recorded a new album, which is released on December 2.

She also has announced she will tour the album next year - her first major concert tour since 2004 and to complete her remarkable transformation she is the cover of next month's Rolling Stone magazine.
