Marc Overmars: “We don’t need to fear Brazil!”

overmars2

Marc Overmars was once the most expensive player of Dutch descent. He moved from Arsenal to Barcelona for a lot of cookies. The little big man from Epe decided to tore up his contract with Barca when he found out his knee was gone. Which gave him legendary status in Camp Nou.

He’s back in Holland, where he’s the co-owner of a restaurant in Epe, while he restores classic cars with his dad. He’s also actively involved in his first club Go Ahead Eagles ( he was the one tipping Louis van Gaal on Demy de Zeeuw) where he made his comeback on the wing for half a season.

Ok Marc. tell us: who will win the World Cup?

“Haha! In the poll I’m doing with my mates, Holland didn’t make it into the finals. Argentina plays Spain and Spain wins the gold. I’m a big Spain fan. Totally impressed with their game two years back and love to see the Barca-spirit in this side. Holland will reach the semis in my little prediction although I forgot who beats them… But, we make it into the semis, so we will beat Brazil this Friday!”

Does Holland actually have a chance against Brazil?

“Of course! We don’t need to fear them! They have the name and the reputation but they’re not as good as they were. In 1994, they had Romario and Bebeto! In 1998, Ronaldo. These lads were phenomenon. Today, they lack that quality. Robinho can’t tie their shoelaces and Fabiano is an ok striker, that’s all. But, Friday it will come down to the form of the day. If we have six players in top form and Brazil one less, we will win it.”

Is this Oranje stronger than the team of 1998?

“No, it’s not. Not on a player-by-player basis. But…Frank (De Boer) and Phillip (Cocu) said it right the other day. In 1998, we never really believed we could go all the way. We weren’t that confident. We were proud to make it to the semis and we were impressed with the Brazilians. I compare it to that 1995 season with Ajax in the Champions League. We traveled to Milan for our first group game against AC and it was as if we were on a school trip, you know? We were all young and overwhelmed by the San Siro and then we saw the Italian players with their hair all gelled and their custom made Italian suits… We were eating our plate of pasta on our laps and we almost said “sir” to the Italian players, haha… This current Oranje squad has that arrogance, that confidence. Wesley Sneijder, Van Persie, Van Bommel… They all really believe they can win it. With Robben and Kuyt and De Jong you also have a number of unflappable players… Stekelenburg looks like he grew literally. He’s become a man in those past weeks. Most of these lads play in big teams now, too. That makes a difference as well. And Elia, he has the same sort of mentality as I had. He said recently: Cool, I’m playing Maicon maybe. Let’s see if I can trick him…, hahahaa….”.

Any disappointments this World Cup?

“Well, the fear of losing doesn’t help. You don’t see good games when coaches are fearful. I didn’t have any expectations from France, so they didn’t disappoint me. And England never performs at tournaments…”

How far does this Oranje madness go for you?

“Oh, no… I watch at home with the kids and my family. I need to be able to see it all well. I actually bought a projector specifically for this World Cup. I’m not sitting on my bench in an oranje jersey or anything, but my kids do. They even go to school in Oranje, haha….”

One point Mark Overmars forgets is we won’t see Spain play Argentina, if Spain beats Paraguay, and Argentina beats Germany they will meet in the semi’s, so the final will have to host most probably Holland or Brazil should either beat either Uruguay or Gana which I suspect. Should Holland beat Brazil, they should not take Gana or Uruguay for granted but should beat either. That would result in Holland in the final, and anything could happen then especially when their confidence will be soaring after taking out Brazil. Therefore we beat Brazil, we can win it all…Hup Holland Hup!!!! Oranje Boven….

Yeah, Overmars is a horrible predictor. He didn’t have the right program to support him. The funny dude. How can you be an ex international and NOT root for Oranje reaching the finals!!

On another note: I’m given the chance to do another liveblog during the game but I won’t. It’s too distracting. I can hardly watch it let alone blog while watching it.

I can imagine my live-blogging would be like

NOOOOOOO

Oh.My.God.

YES SNEIJDER!!

Good ball Dirk.

WATCH OUT!!!!!!!!

Ref, are you blind???????

Deep, deep deep…. No, right right…no left left!!!!

Good tackle Nigel but watch it.

Good tackle Mark but watch it.

GO ROBBEN!!!!!

Etc etc

Jan – I think you could have used another headline here. Instead of the one negative phrase Overmars uses (he has no idea who we play in the semis anyway), you could have said. “Holland will Beat Brazil: Overmars/Kluivert/Jonk/deBoer ” or “Overmars confident against Brazil.
The negative element is really not required mate !!

…..and its also interesting that the ‘98 team players we all praise so much did NOT expect to win the cup, inlike the current squad. Thats already an extra 50% mental advantage !

@Jan – lol at ‘Good tackle Nigel but watch it!’ Have said that a few times myself last season!
I was also saying lots of terrible things about Robinho till he left, I’ll probably take up where I left off.

@Robbie,

Thank you, because I was about to write that and it was at the tip of my tongue. For someone with great knowledge and experience, it’s hard at times to read a bracket properly, especially for the team you claim to support (couldn’t resist sarcasm). With hours to go thanks for the support, but if our Oranje have read his comments, it will only be more fuel and more cause to go further, shit, I wish I was on the squad, cause after our win, Overmars would be one of the few people I would give a shout out to.

@ Jan,

Thank you for coming and saying that, I was waiting for some kind of comment from you either in the article or post and you’re 110% absolutely right. HOW ARE YOU GOING TO CLAIM SPAIN?!?!? As I mentioned previously, major Oranje and Eire fan, cause I’m Dutch-Irish and I would never, ever disrespect my team and their supports such as. Even if I felt this way, I wouldn’t pick the favourites, but clearly Marc is glory hunting and like most who haven’t realized yet, he has put his foot in his mouth. I don’t blame ya for the live-blog, enjoy the game and watch our beloved Oranje march our way through to the way and if we’re lucky it’ll be either Spain/Argentina; either way when we beat Spain, I want to see what he has to say. If we play Argentina, tasty revenge match; however against Ze Germans wwwwwwoooooooo ultimate.

Thanks for letting me rant; Hup Nederlands Hup!!!!

@Carlos: I like headlines that are controversial :-) .

But you’re right!

I think Marc made his predictions before the tournament started, and so he expected Spain to top their group and be on the other side of the knockout stages, therefore making a Spain-Argentina final possible. It also means that he thought Spain would be Oranje in the semis. Well, predictions never go as planned, so there’s no worry there!

Anyone else finding the Brazilian fans that are trolling here annoying? They post like 3 or 4 messages in a row but change their names each time, and post stupid messages pretending to be Dutch fans but saying we have no hope. At least they are mostly trolling older articles so they aren’t interfering with our conversations so much.

Are people happy to stick with VDWiel? I’m keen on Boulah. Less creative but more secure, and strong in the tackle.

I think van der Wiel is better to start with. From the training videos the guys all look comfortable, not too serious. All the anticipation the suspense, it’s just around the corner!

whew, only managed about 3 hours sleep due to the excitement, thankfully today’s finally arrived! Can’t wait for the game to start, I’m sure we’re gonna have an excellent game and surprise the hell out of the Brazilians :)
Hup Holland!

Bert will play Kuyt. Not Vaart. Van der Wiel over Boulah always. Boulah will lose himself trying to prove his salt and end up being red-carded.

God, how I loved this litle guy!
Marc Overdrive was the man!
Well, Bergkamp was the man actually, but Marc was hugely insanely good also…

Guys, today I’m not so nervous as yesterday. Today I woke up and the sun was gone here in Lisboa, replaced by the greyest sky ever. Good sign, hum? No sun, grey sky. One could thinks the elements are with us!

Hup Holland Hup!
