135% increase in funds for space programme likely

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has decided to increase financial allocation for the National Space Programme by 135 percent in 2009-10, according to the figures obtained from the Planning Commission. The government had allocated Rs 3.12 billion for the National Space Programme in the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) in 2008-09 and the proposed allocation for 2009-10 is projected at Rs 7.33 billion – for 20 ongoing and six new projects. The government would allocate Rs 5.04 billion for the ongoing projects, in 2009-10, and Rs 1.84 billion for the new ones. The new projects include Rs 180 million for setting up a Pak-China Seismic Network, Rs 267.2 million for the development of CFIs to fly onboard communication satellite Pak Sat-IR in Lahore, Rs 222.58 million for the development of laboratories for the National Satellite Development Programme in Lahore and Rs 211.25 million for logistic support facilities for the National Space Programme at Lahore. sajid chaudhry
