...Is a Real Boy vinyl

(2008-08-28)

I was curious about the vinyl, so I e-mailed Doghouse Records on 2008-06-10 with a couple questions. It looks like an intern responded to me. Here's what she had to say.

The vinyl's [sic] came with one green and one black record. Also, there were 1000 copies printed. I hope this helps!

Lineup changes

(2008-08-28)

So, the original lineup (in 2000) is as follows:1

But Eichenstein left before anything was released (according to album notes that he does not appear on). According to the In Your Dreams notes, the band consisted of Bemis, Linder, Levin, and Span at the time. But, by the time of Baseball, only Bemis, Linder, and Levin are left, with Eichenstein and Span referred to (by their first names) as former members.

Because Say Anything formed in 2000, Junior Varsity was recorded that same year, and Eichenstein was not listed on the album, I think it's safe to assume he left in 2000. Because Baseball (2001) refers to Span as a former member and In Your Dreams (also 2001 or late 2000) refers to him as the guitarist, Span must have left around 2001. Finally, a post in 2002 on Say Anything's website announced Levin's departure.2

Around the time of ...Is a Real Boy's release, Dan DeLauro appears to be the first one to have joined (in 2003). Then, Kevin Seaton and Caspar Adams (Kevin Sachs) signed up (in 2004), leaving the band as follows.3, 4

However, DeLauro and Seaton left in 2005 (or maybe 2004).5 The exact dates that they left are not on the internet, but I think it's safe to assume that Seaton left before the next bassist joined and DeLauro left before the next guitarist joined.

Say Anything kept charging forward and Andy Jackson joined in 20056 (although, according to Jackson, he never actully joined the band, only toured with them). However, Jackson left because of Bemis' instability that same year.7 Gabriel Rodriguez joined for a short time in 2005, but details on him are sparse.8

Of course, sometime in 2005, the band consisted only of Bemis, Linder, Adams, and Alex Kent (the band's bassist after Seaton left).9 This is my guess as to the lineup around late 2005. I assume Jackson and Rodriguez are not listed on the Doghouse site10 because they are touring members. Or, this might be because there was a time when Jackson and Rodriguez had left, but Adams was still in the band. Also, it's possible that Jackson was brought in to replace Rodriguez (meaning that the latter was only in the band for two or three months).

So, Adams is kicked out of the band after a show in 2005 by Bemis. Then, Bemis goes to rehab.11 Around this time, the Turner brothers (Jeff and Jake) join (in late 2005/early 2006),12 followed by Parker Case (in 2006), leaving the band as follows.13

Of course, Linder also sings some vocals during live shows and Case plays more guitar than keyboards, but above is just what Say Anything's website says.14, 15
