Got Duke Nukem Forever for PS3 ($29 Kmart FYI) the other day. Beat it yesterday and I've already replayed some parts. Thought it was going to be longer than what it was. Then again I did play it a lot those two days, so I'm not sure how long it took exactly. Probably about the same as the average single player.
Never thought I wouldn't get the game day 1. I'm a huge fan of Duke Nukem 3D. But after seeing the reviews and gamer comments I decided to wait a bit for a price drop. Now that I've beaten it, I believe reviewers were to harsh on the game. Well, either that or they are simply not Duke Nukem fans. It's a miracle the game even released after being in development hell for so many years. You can't expect the graphics to be on par with many games this gen and some dated gameplay mechanics is to be expected. Being a big fan of the Duke, I still found the game to be fun overall.
On the positive side,
+ I was glad to see all the humor and Duke's great one liners return. There is lots of funny dialogue, things to read, and messages to listen in the game. References include Team America, Portal, Starship Troopers, Saints Row, Leroy Jenkins, DN3D, etc.
+ Babes
+ Saving wasn't a problem. Checkpoints are frequent. Quitting to the main menu is very quick.
+ Extras. Once you beat the game there are old trailers, art, pics, and cheats that unlock
+ full body awareness
+ Interacting with objects
+ Duke's Mighty Foot. There isn't a kick button anymore sadly, but Duke still kicks in doors and squashes shrunken enemies.
+ Executions. Would have been nice if there were more of them though.
+ Shrunken gameplay & puzzles. I enjoyed these parts of the game. I'm sure not everyone does/will.
+ Mini games. There are a bunch of mini games like Pinball, Air Hockey, and Alien Abortion(like whack a mole) in DNF which I found can be a bit addictive. They aren't just there for the hell of it either. There is a kind of goal for each one and if you meet it, Duke's Ego (health) bar increases.
Mixed bag...
+/- Gunplay: Hiding to wait for your Ego(health) bar regenerate isn't very Duke like. I think a combination of something like health packs + killing (after all it is an Ego bar) to regenerate health would have been better.
Something seemed a bit off with headshots.
+/- Level Design. Also I like the design of the Devastator more in DN3D than Forever.
On the negative side...
- Ammo boxes should stay open once you open them. This was a bit annoying during any big fights where you go through lots of ammo. When using the RPG in particular.
- Weapon limit. I was surprised by this. Can't believe you can only carry two guns at a time. You should be able to carry all of them. There aren't that many. This is Duke Nukem we are talking about, not Halo.
- Loading is on the long side, however I thought it was really only annoying when you die and in a couple cases, short levels. This one driving segment was seriously like 10 seconds long. Dunno why there was so much loading at that part.
-Graphics. I wasn't expecting great graphics. For the most part they aren't good compared to modern games. There was actually a couple times however I thought the game did look game. I believe one of those times was in the Hive, looking up at the hole above above and seeing the light shine down. That actually looked good. The women character models look decent.
I haven't played any multiplayer yet. So I can't really comment on it. I saw you get a crib which can be customized with unlocks that come from playing multiplayer and you can customize your Duke some.
Hopefully once Gearbox finishes up on one of it's current projects (Aliens, BIA, Borderlands 2) they will make another Duke game. I'm sure they didn't buy the IP just to release this one game. Plus a sequel is hinted at, at the end of the game. Then on top of that 2K Games said DNF was profitable. It could be a launch title for the next Xbox/Playstation. Hell, maybe it's already in the works. In addition to those three games I mentioned, they still have one other secret project in the works. I'm confident Gearbox can bring Duke into modern times. They just get him.
So I was just flipping through the TV stations and I came across a 'Married...with Children' rerun. At first I was like, SWEET. But then I noticed what station it was on and I was like It was nick@nite. I looked into it and apparently they just starting with he re-runs last week. I can't believe it. Even by today's' standards the show is very raunchy. I mean there is a lot of sex jokes/talk. Plus cleavage.
I'm just really surprised to see it on nick. Even if it is at "nite". The nick@nite I remember watching aired reruns of shows like Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, Happy Days, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The **** Van Dyke Show, etc. Just a sign of the times I suppose. Kids "grow up" so fast these days.
Then again, I guess it's similar to Adult Swim on Cartoon Network. I guess maybe that is what they are going for now. And yet, it just seems weird, or kind of wrong, the show is on nick. Not that I'm complaining, because I love Married...with Children. Only the funniest show ever alongside Seinfeld. If it was up to me I would have re-runs of it on every station. I'm just surprised what was once the edgiest show on tv is now airing on a station that was always innocent, in my memory of it.
I feel like I just made the 2010 list. Where does the time go? 2011 looks to be amazing unless all you buy is exclusive Xbox games lol.

What the deuce?! Already beat Bioshock 2! I just got the game three days ago from Amazon (deal of the day, shipped quite fast). I don't think I played it that much. It has to be a good bit shorter than the first game. Regardless, I thought it was better than the first. The story was much more interesting. The ending was much better than the first game. I guess they are gonna continue the franchise considering how it ended. I look forward to seeing how they go about doing that.
I'm nearing the end of Final Fantasy XIII and all the way through I was like, damn this game is gorgeous. Is it possible for a RPG to look significantly better than this on 360/PS3 without being turned into a slide show? It's hard to imagine one.
I just don't see any other Japanese developer investing lots of money, and time, into a new game engine that would surpass FF XIII. As for Western RPG developers, Bioware is probably the only one that has a shot at it. ME2 is a great looking game and with Epic always working to improve their UE3, ME3 should look even better. Then there's Dragon Age 2 which according to Bioware, will look "super hot". I'm sure it will look better than the first game since there is lots of room for improvement, but I doubt it will top FF XIII. Of course I would love to see that happen though, cause that would mean one amazing looking RPG is on the way.
I thought the first ME was a 10/10 game, but after beating ME2 weeks ago, I would probably give the first game a lower score if I had just played it for the first time right before ME2 came out. Bioware improved everything. It's a great game. I would say Game of the Year as of right now. So I really don't need to say anymore, buy this game right now if you don't have it.
Can't wait for Mass Effect 3.
Mini Ninjas
This was a fun, cute, game that I believe all ages can enjoy. There is a main character, Hiro, but also his four friends that you save and get to play as. They each have a unique ability/fighting style. Hiro is the only one that can use magic abilities though, which are fun.
Some of the abilities are pretty funny. The one girl can use a flute to make enemies dance and another ability allows you to take control of your enemies body (you enter it, like you can with all animals in the game). There is also a camouflage that Hiro can use. It's really funny. You run around under a bush Metal Gear Solid style and enemies think nothing of it unless you run into them. You can run or stealth walk with it on.
Hiro has a special hat. It can block projectiles and you use it as a boat/sled in the game. Projectiles can be deflected with your weapon too.
The game really makes you feel like you're in a ninja world. It's got all the ninja tools, scrolls, building architecture, stealth attacks, etc.
I had no intention of buying this game, but the game went on sale for just under $40 near the end of December and I had been receiving peer pressure to buy it like everyday by a friend. So I did.
Like the first MW, the single player is very short. The story is ridiculous and and I would say about half of it is good, half is just ok. Played through it twice, once on normal and once on Vet. Glad they did away with the infinite enemies and grenades.
Spec ops is the best part and was the reason my friend kept asking me to buy it. Didn't take that long to beat them all on veteran, but it was a lot of fun while it lasted.
I beat the game last month sometime and I don't don't care about the multiplayer, so I'll probably never play it again.
Fallout 3:GOTYE
This is a great game. I haven't beat it yet, but I'm somewhere around 73 hours into it. Close to beating it.
Since it's a sandbox RPG, it can't deliver the same kind of engaging story that other RPGs can, like Mass Effect 2 for example. But it's still solid. I thought it was funny how you start the game as a baby then grow up.
The game is all about freedom. Doing what you want to do, when you want to do it. I think exploring is fun until you reach the max level. Some of the motivation seems to go away then cause you can't gain anymore levels, perks, and by that point you will be good on money, ammo, and weapons.
The DLC it comes with was great for the most part. I haven't done Broken Steel, but Mothership Zeta and Operation: Anchorage were a lot of fun. The Aliens were funny and I liked their weapons. Point Lookout was good also, but I though The Pitt was meh.
A few negative things...
Navigating downtown can be a little frustrating at times because there is destruction everywhere blocking roads. The tunnels as well in the downtown area. Thank goodness for fast travel.
The game lags at times in some of the DLC. Point Lookout out in particular. I don't know why, but it is a little annoying.
There are glitches similar to Oblivion. They are rare, but they are there. It's possible your character could get stuck in certain rocky areas, the game froze on me a handful of times, and there is other odd things that can happen. One example, I entered a building that apparently I wasn't suppose to or something, it wasn't red or anything (red means you are breaking in), and as soon as the screen loaded some guy said, this is the last time I'm going to warn you, get out. It was actually the first time, but I still exited the door right away and when I got outside everyone was hostile, so I had to reload an earlier save.
That's another thing, loading. I wish the game didn't have to load when you enter a building. The loading isn't long, but it would be nice if there was none when entering a building.
I haven't played the game in several days. Need to get back to it. I want to finish it before FF XIII comes out next month.
The water heater broke!! ****! Now I can't get a shower. It's ice cold. I attempted to try anyways, but I'm pretty sure the lower half of my body is half dead after being under the water for for a couple seconds.
For reference, a list of games tentatively scheduled to release for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC in 2010. This isn't every game releasing this year, but it's most of them as of this posting. There's bound to be games releasing this year that haven't been announced or confirmed to yet. Excludes sports and music games. If there is a mistake or I left out anything you think I should not have, just leave a comment and I'll adjust it.
