Comic-Con 2011: The Clone Wars Season 4 Panel Recap

July 23, 2011

words: Bonnie Burton

Couldn’t make it to The Clone Wars Season 4 panel featuring The Clone Wars supervising director Dave Filoni and producer Cary Silver, moderated by Lucasfilm StarWars.com’s Pablo Hidalgo. Don’t worry! Below are some of the panel highlights

Dive right in!
Season 4 starts with an underwater story arc on the planet of Mon Calamari. Filoni said they wanted the cameras to have similar movements to underwater scuba camera. They had to create an entire civilization from the buildings to the population of the people — male and female fish, warriors, the Quarren army, etc.

It’s a….!”
Captain Ackbar is indeed in this underwater story arc. There was some debate whether or not they should have Ackbar refer to traps, but they didn’t do that.

Watch out for sharks!:
The shark-like race works with the Separatist. They have sharp teeth and bite the heads off of characters, but Filoni assures that it’s not too violent because “bubbles make it better.”

Kit Fisto is back!
“Everyone likes Kit Fisto because he smiles,” Filoni says.”He doesn’t have his shirt on, so that’s a bit of a Twilight reference.”

Scuba Clone Troopers!
Kit Fisto has scuba clone troopers in Season 4. Filoni challenges the 501st Legion to come up with scuba trooper costumes!

New Clone Trooper Story Arc with Captain Rex:
Umbara is a new planet shrouded in darkness & for the first time you get to see clone troopers killing non-droids, but infact humaniods that live on the planet. All the technoloy the Umbarans fight with weapons you’ve never seen before. Fans have actually seen Umbarans before; Palpatine’s creepy aid is an Umbaran. And a lot of the favorite troopers who have survived so far like Captain Rex and Fives will show up in this episode.

New Faces and Armor:
They changed the look of a lot of the main characters like Anakin, Ahsoka and Obi-Wan, so this season they upgraded the facial expressions on the clone faces and changed some of the armor as well. Captain Rex doesn’t like the new armor because he thinks it’s too disposable so he makes a hybrid of his old armor welded together with his new armor. He’s worried that the Republic looks at the clones as more of a disposable army.

New Jedi Character: General Krell
He’s the same species as Dexter Jettster! He’s an uncoventional, powerful Jedi who causes the clones to question things in different ways.

C-3PO & R2-D2 have new adventures!
Star Wars is like a fairy tale from their point of view,” Filoni says. the classic animated series Droids was an inspiration.

Never Cry Wolffe
Clone trooper Wolffe returns but he’s different than Rex since he lost all his men so he’sa bit of a “curmudgeon” and doesn’t like C-3PO much.

Madame Mandalorian?

Filoni revealed that Battlestar Galactica actress Katee Sackoff will be voicing a female Mandalorian. He really wanted to have an actress voice her that really understood the fan culture. Filoni wanted to put a female Mandalorian on the show to give the woman fans another cool costume option to cosplay. Her helmet design is based on a barn owl because Filoni’s wife likes owls. Director Jon Favreau will be back as Mandalorian Pre Vizsla, as well.

Nightsisters return!
Savage Opress, Asajj Ventress, and Nightsisters will return this season as well. (As Filoni mentions the Nightsisters return for Season 4, the geek girl cosplay collective Team Unicorn — dressed as Dathomir’s Dark Side witches — walk up onstage! And he shows a clip that isn’t completed yet and even George Lucas hasn’t seen yet — of the Nightsisters fighting against battle droids!)

Bring on the Bounty Hunters!
Filoni says Cad Bane, Bossk, and Boba Fett will be back, along with an old favorite coming to the series — Dengar!

To Han or Not to Han?
A fan asks if we’ll see a young Han Solo in the series. Filoni says no, unless Lucas really insisted on it. “I don’t want to be the guy who defines that.”

By Your Commando!
Filoni confirmed clone commandos will be on the show, but not Delta Squad because he doesn’t want to mess with that continuity.

More Mortis on the way
“We’re going to do more about those kinds of mystical things in the future. It won’t be the last you hear of those types of stories. And you’ll learn more about those Force wielders and what they are and how they fit into the bigger spectrum of things,” Filoni says in answer to a fan’s question on whether the Mortis planet was the home of the Force.

New Challenges for Ahsoka:
Lux’s character might challenge Ahsoka’s own feelings about someone that she care for. When a fan asks about her pending fate, Filoni says he’s thought of about eight different possible outcomes for Ahsoka, but nothing has been decided yet.

  1. Blaze says:

Other than that I really do believe that this is going to be an amazing season and I can’t wait for it to premeire. I do hope that Ahsoka doesn’t die even though she doesn’t make an appearance in OT.
Also, I also absolutely loved the Mortis arc and I can’t wait to see more on that in this season.
I also can’t wait for the return of the Nightsisters and of Savage Oppress.

  2. Blaze says:

    On another note…
    At CloneTrooperZero-
Han wasn’t born after the fall of the Repulbic. He couldn’t have been because he is OLDER than Luke and Luke was born WHEN the Republic fell.

  3. DarthVaderScubaMask_9 says:

    1. She dies.
    2. She goes to the dark side.
    3. She’s knighted.
    4. She grows more attached to Plo Koon and eventually becomes his padawan.
    5. She’s lost forever.
    6. She goes into hiding.
    7. She somehow loses her Force abilities.
    8. She gets too attached to Lux and ends up leaving the Jedi order.

As a plus, all of these outcomes can intertwine with others, like so:
She’s knighted > She goes to the dark side. :)

  4. Buster says:

Well whatever her fate maybe, and i hope for something a bit dark, as star wars does dark very well, i would like to see her character have a stronger story arc in the fourth season and see some seeds laid down as to whatever her outcome maybe. Even end the season with a major cliffhanger around her, then culminate her story in season five.
Asoka can’t carry on being the young cocky padawan, otherwise she may become irritating, so i think sooner rather than later now, the conclusion of Asoka’s story will have to be fleshed out.
Lastly i believe that if they do a fifth season, that it should be the last one and finish the Clone Wars while it’s still good and not repeating itself, and end it with a build up to Revenge Of The Sith, even if it does contradict the previous anime type cartoon that they did.

  5. Rusty Droid says:

    I always thought…
    A – She’d get knighted, then…
    B – be given a secret assignment that…
C – no one (not even Anakin) knows about like…
D – Windu suspecting a plot against the Jedi and sending her into hiding with the Kyber Crystal.

When we saw the episode in which Bane forces Anakin to open the holocron, Anakin says ” I couldn’t let you die, Ahsoka,” it made me wonder if the last scene in the CW series should actually be a deleted scene out of ROTS. Between dispatching Windu and heading to the Jedi Temple, would Anakin have warned Ahsoka off and told her to hide from any nearby clonetroopers and get rid of your lightsaber? Since she was his own padawan, could she have been the only Jedi he still trusted?

  6. Jedi Master says:

    @CloneTrooperZero

It’s true that Han Solo was born 10 years before the fall of the Republic so he could easily be in The Clone Wars.

  7. Clone1804 Jak says:

I have a feeling Fives is gonna die…I’m just saying…they already kill of most of Domino Squad so Fives would be the next and last…

  8. Sam Gordon says:

Lucas retconned that EU stuff. Filoni directs the show.. but those big decisions come from Lucas himself. Did you miss the interview with Filoni about how they wanted to bring in the Mandolorians in the first season but Lucas told them “no” and that all the ideas concerning the Mandalorians for this series came from Lucas? Lucas is heavily involved in the series.. he just doesn’t write or direct anything. He’s an idea man.

  9. Ch says:

Ahsoka won’t be knighted she is way to young!!! I disagree whith Kiah! They have killed off alot of charictors already and I belive she will end up dying. It would also draw anakin one step closer the dark side…..

  10. Daniel says:

i think rex dies but i think that he just doesnt have a line in the movie. big deal. plo koon never did either. and he died. ahsoka was most likely killed in order 66

  11. Eric says:

I would like to see more of Quilan Vos. He appeared once and it was only cool for those who know the character. I think he’d mix it up a bit to have more appearances.

  12. Super clone says:

I am so ready for season 4! I hope Chewbacca will come back he rocks!

  13. female_sith says:

i’ve been thinking of possible outcomes for ahsoka…she cant be knighted because you would have heard of her in the movies – i mean, shes anakins padawan! padawans and masters usually stick together, even after they’re both knights. ahsoka would have been with anakin on at least one of the missions you see in the movies, but you never even hear of ahsoka in episode 3. she cant die cause shes too popular with the fans and it will make most of them upset. lucasarts wouldnt want unhappy fans, im guessing. shes also too nice to go to the dark side, and that would also make fans unhappy. i think she falls in love with lux and leaves the order.

  14. Teren says:

Rex looks super cool as an Arc Trooper! I also had my worries with Ahsoka. I figured Dave would do something about her that would put a true test on Anakin. His main problem, is that he is not yet ready to let go of the thinks he holds dear. If Ahsoka were to die, I think it would be a huge effect on Anakin. I would be furious if Rex died…though I see it coming. I also hope they do more with Savage and Maul..we all know Maul survived. Ooh ooh ooh!!! Dave should do an episode were Sidious tells about his youth to Dooku! Give us all a more in depth look at the old republic…but give it some connections to a current clone wars event. I CAN’T WAIT FOR SEASON 4!!!!! XD

  15. Teren says:

Why is Lux involved with Death Watch? “I have a bad feeling about this”

  16. Savage Opress says:

I think ahsoka will fall IN LOVE with lux bonteri and leave the order. Or she gets killed or knighted. CAN”T WAIT FOR SEASON FOUR!. GENERAL KRELL IS SOOO COOL!

  17. private part says:

OMG! this is SOOO cool looking! we have Lux, female death watch, and a new jedi! so beastly!

  18. Dude, I can think of at least 8 possible ways for Ahsoka to DIE.

1 She gets killed by Grievous.
2 she gets killed by Ventress.
3 She gets killed by Dooku.
4 She gets killed by Opress.
5 She gets killed by Cad Bane or another random bounty hunter.
6 She gats killed by a random creature on a random planet(preferably in an arena).
7 She drowns on Mon Calamari.
8 Or my favorite, Jar Jar has an “Itsy-Bitsy Acci-Denty” and kills her.

Of course, I would like to see her die by the hands of Clones or Jedi, like if she turns to the DS or cause of order 66. Oh, and I hope Lux dies with her, he is so stupid. Dave Baloney needs to actually watch a episode off actual Star Wars and read a Star Wars book. He might learn a thing or two.

  19. Teren says:

    Wow. Slam. That was harsh.

  20. Ben says:

Much as I like the idea of Ahsoka getting together with somebody, I REALLY hope Lux kicks the bucket, if you catch my drift.

One option nobody is considering is, maybe she just runs away. If I was a commander in a massaive galactic war, constantly getting shot at, blown up, beat up… I’d run away. Not to say I’m a coward, but maybe she just gets fed up with it all.

    Here’s my theory.

Ahsoka, gallivanting across some planet, deflecting blaster bolts with her sickass lightsabers, sees somebody she cares about die. Then another. Then another. She makes the decision to leave for the Unknown Regions to take refuge (Not get captured by Vong, though. That could get ugly) from the war. She tells Skywalker, who gets all whiny like Skywalker does, but lets her go and she lives out her life peacefully in the Unknown Regions.

Did I mention hat somewhere i here Lux dies a horrible and painful death? No? Well, he does.

  21. Ben says:

They should have a competition for putting your own character into the series. I get that TCW is probs already done production, if there’s only five seasons, but hey, just an idea.

  22. LUX DIES A PAINFULL DEATH? Where? Tell me!!! I need a good laugh and am feeling malevolent today.

  23. Skilletgirl says:

Really, Ahsoka shouldn’t die! We all know that they’ll make it some long, dramatic death with Anakin being all mushy (as usual), and then Anakin going crazy and killing a bunch of droids or something! And making it obvious that the Clone Wars had jumped the shark! SOOO LAME! And it’s predictable! The good guys should NOT be predictable!

  24. “Really, Ahsoka shouldn’t die!” She isn’t immortal, I think she should. And I don’t think Anakin would get mushy. I think he would go uber-emo and start yelling, screaming, and slaughtering, like he did when his mom died. And you never know. Who didn’t predict Anakin falling in love with Padme after they saw episode 1? Probably nobody. I think the whole Anakin-having-an-apprentice thing is sooo dumb. The Clone Wars has been going a little too far recently, it’s almost as bad as the Force Unleashed with all it’s continuity probs. But if Ahsoka doesn’t die, then she should join Anakin in order 66 and become Darth Snips. “Darth snips.” “Yes master.” “Rriiissse.”

  25. Teren says:

Exactly! Stop with the whole “Ahsoka shouldn’t die!” If she does, it would affect Anakin. He can’t let go of what her loves. He murdered, due to his mom’s deaath…he slaughtered all the Jedi, to save Padme and end up killing her himself. Now…he has an Apprentice. This will test him and his dark future. To express how imbalanced he is, SHE NEEDS TO DIE. He must experience a severe loss.

  26. Teren says:

New season 4 trailer is beast!

  27. Tahiri Veila says:

MY GOOOOSH. Ahsoka’s fate is such a controversal subject, lol. Let’s just all shut up and wait to see what happens…

Oh, Sithspit, what am I saying? I think Snips falls in love with (stupid-head -_-) Lux, Luxy dies, and Ahsoka takes a step, …erm, LEAP to the DS. As much as I know Ahsoka dying is a VERY big possibility, it would be much more interesting if Snips falls to the DS.

But like I said, let’s all shut up, and wait in agony for September 16th. xP

  28. Skilletgirl says:

Plus, some people are saying that she has to die in this series because it would be lame to have Starkiller or Vader hunting her down. IT WOULD NOT BE LAME!! It’d be awesome!
