Tigers Enjoy Pre-Season Win

Posted on: Wed 27 Jul 2011

Hull City made it four wins from four pre-season games as they registered a 3-1 victory against League Two side Bradford at the KC Stadium on Wednesday night.

Tom Cairney's first half brace was added to by Austrian trialist Martin Pusic after the break as Nigel Pearson's side enjoyed another successful run-out ahead of the 2011/12 season.

Tigers (First Half): Adriano Basso, Liam Rosenior, James Chester, Sonny Bradley, Andy Dawson, Jamie Devitt, Paul McKenna, Tom Cairney, Robert Brady, Matty Fryatt, Dele Adebola.

Andy Dawson returned to action after missing last Saturday's win against Liverpool and captained the side while youth team product Sonny Bradley was given the chance to impress in the middle of defence from the start.

City should perhaps have hit the front in only the third minute, but James Chester couldn't convert an in-swinging corner from the right.

The Tigers did, however, take an early lead when Tom Cairney curled a seventh-minute free kick inside the near post from 20 yards after Brady's promising run had been ended illegally by a Bradford defender.

City continued to dominate possession and Dele Adebola's clever flick almost had Matty Fryatt through on goal but goalkeeper Martin Hansen was off his line quickly to sweep up the danger.

Jamie Devitt's 30-yard free kick warmed the hands of Hansen before the resulting corner was taken off Chester's head by Guy Branston in the nick of time.

Hansen produced another fine save to deny Devitt after the Irish winger took advantage of a mistake by Steve Williams, the keeper diving to his right to push away a shot from the edge of the box.

Fine wing play from Brady down the left in the 24th minute had the Bradford defence turned inside out but his final cross was just too long for Adebola at the far post.

Bradford's only real threat in the opening half-hour came when James Hanson's cross deflected across the face of Adriano Basso's goal.

Devitt and Hansen seemed to be having their own personal duel in the first half, the Bradford stopper this time producing a fine save to tip the Irishman's delicate chip over the bar in the 32nd minute.

City's efforts in open play were rewarded six minutes before the break when Cairney grabbed his second of the game. The midfielder stepped inside from the left before finishing low past Hansen with his right foot from 12 yards.

It could and should have been 3-0 a minute later when Fryatt found himself through on goal, but he travelled too close to Hansen and his final shot was diverted away by the goalkeeper.

Basso did get his gloves dirty in the final few moments of the half, turning away a shot from Dominic Rowe and saving a low effort from Hanson.

Half Time: Tigers 2-0 Bradford

Tigers (Second Half): Peter Gulacsi, Danny East, Kevin Kilbane, Sonny Bradley (Conor Townsend 80), Joe Dudgeon, Kamel Ghilas, James Harper, Will Atkinson, Martin Pusic, Nick Barmby, Jay Simpson (Danny Emerton 70).

Sub Not Used: Gavan Holohan.

City made ten changes at half time with only Bradley surviving from the first 45 minutes. Austrian trialist Martin Pusic was given a run on the left wing, Kamel Ghilas a chance on the right with Nick Barmby pushing up alongside Jay Simpson in attack. Kevin Kilbane was Bradley's new partner at centre back with Danny East and Joe Dudgeon flanking them.

For the record, Bradford made no changes and almost scored when Michael Flynn got on the end of a loose ball in the box but fired over the bar.

The visitors went close again in the 55th minute, but Ghilas cleared off the line after a corner had been headed goalwards.

Bradford pulled a goal back on 66 minutes when a loose ball across the field was seized upon and allowed substitute Mark Stewart to advance before finishing low past Gulacsi.

City then had to make a change when Simpson hobbled off with a knock. Danny Emerton was his replacement.

The Tigers soon restored their two-goal advantage when Pusic found the net in the 72nd minute. After collecting Will Atkinson's smart through ball, the Austrian moved it to his right out from under his feet and away from the advancing goalkeeper before tucking it into the bottom corner of the net.

City made another change with ten minutes remaining as Bradley made way to warm applause for fellow youth team product Conor Townsend to take his place.

Barmby almost added a fourth on 83 minutes but his effort from a tight angle came back off the post while at the other end, Gulacsi got down well to save from Stewart.

City were denied what looked like a certain penalty when Pusic was hacked down in the box with two minutes to go, but the referee waved play on to the surprise of most in the ground.

Bradford: Martin Hansen, Lee Bullock, Luke O'Brien, Michael Flynn, Guy Branston, Steve Williams, Dominic Rowe (David Syers 63), Chris Mitchell, James Hanson (Ross Hannah 77), Nialle Rodney (Mark Stewart 63), Jamie Green (James Cronesbury 77).

Subs Not Used: Jon Brain, Andrew Burns, Nahti Wells.

Attendance: 2,155.
