After a couple of games out, Jack Hobbs returned to action for City, partnering James Chester in the middle of the back four. Robert Koren and Corry Evans were also back in action after missing the midweek win against Bradford.

City got straight into their stride with Robert Brady seeing a shot deflected just wide. From the resulting corner, Matty Fryatt turned inside the box before firing a shot against the crossbar.

Veteran striker Jack Lester caused a problem for the City defence in the fifth minute, his low effort being deflected just wide of Peter Gulacsi's near post.

A smart turn from Dele Adebola in the Chesterfield box set up City's next chance, the striker's shot was blocked by goalkeeper Tommy Lee but the rebound fell to Fryatt who produced a weak shot which was cleared off the line.

The Tigers took the lead in the 27th minute when a shot from the edge of the box was deflected into Fryatt's path and he made no mistake in firing past Lee from about ten yards out.

A fine run from Brady almost brought a second goal, but he was denied by a fine save from Lee.

Half Time: Tigers 1-0 Chesterfield

Tigers (Second Half): Adriano Basso, Liam Rosenior (Danny East 63), James Chester, Jack Hobbs (Sonny Bradley 76), Andy Dawson, Jamie Devitt, James Harper, Tom Cairney, Martin Pusic, Dele Adebola (Nick Barmby 63), Matty Fryatt (Will Atkinson 63).

Subs Not Used: Kevin Kilbane, Conor Townsend.

City made six changes at half time with Adriano Basso, Andy Dawson, Jamie Devitt, James Harper, Tom Cairney and trialist Martin Pusic all entering the action.

Chester made a fine tackle early in the second half to deny Lester, who looked set to work himself an opening in the City box.

At the other end, Adebola and Fryatt both saw shots charged down.

Quick feet from Fryatt saw him create an opportunity, but it was snuffed out by Lee before Cairney crossed for Adebola who volleyed over from eight yards.

City made a further three changes just after the hour with Danny East, Nick Barmby and Will Atkinson all being introduced and it was right back East who almost doubled the lead but his shot from Atkinson's lay-off flew over the bar.

The Tigers did double their lead on 72 minutes after Barmby's hard work had earned his side a corner. Devitt sent the ball over the the far post where Chester met it with a looping header that went over Lee and dropped into the net.

Aaron Downes produced a well-timed challenge to prevent Devitt adding a third a couple of minutes later.

Cairney was denied by a good save from substitute goalkeeper Greg Fleming with just over ten minutes remaining.
