DVD Description

Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Rob Marshall, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides captures the fun, adventure and humour that ignited the hit franchise. Johnny Depp returns to his iconic role of Captain Jack Sparrow in an action-packed tale of truth, betrayal, youth and demise. When Jack crosses paths with a woman from his past (Penelope Cruz), he’s not sure if it’s love or if she’s a ruthless con artist using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. When she forces him aboard the Queen Anne’s Revenge, the ship of the formidable pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane), Jack finds himself on an unexpected adventure in which he doesn’t know who to fear more: Blackbeard or the woman from his past.

The international cast includes franchise vets Geoffrey Rush as the vengeful Captain Hector Barbossa, and Kevin R. McNally as Captain Jack’s longtime comrade Joshamee Gibbs, plus Sam Claflin as a stalwart missionary and Astrid Berges-Frisbey as a mysterious mermaid.

3.0 out of 5 stars the jack sparrow show, 20 Aug 2011
By
Mr. Pj Williams (cardiff uk) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE)    (REAL NAME)
well its the 4th in the series and that usually means bad things to start. I hated the 3rd one as it was oh so over the top stunt wise it took away from the film and I found myself concentrating on the stunts rather than the plot. I believed I would be living this experience again and I did for about the first twenty minutes, but then it settled down and got on with it. if not very slowly. the good thing bout this film is depp. he is basically staring in the jack sparrow show and is great as jack as usual. the jokes are great and the character is still allowed to grow. sadly no one else really does. the rest of the cast are like extras to jack. the plot is slow moving, the stunts over the top and take too long. its better than the 3rd in that it is more coherent however you find your mind wandering in large sections until it tightens up again and the ending is probably the best half hour of the film.

in short its ok and worth a watch as a throw away film that you will chuckle at jacks antics and the story is ok if not slow moving. could have been worse but could have been better had it been paced like teh first with more interesting ancillary characters

5.0 out of 5 stars Pirates outing part 4, 26 Aug 2011
Well well well! So many reviews here seem to be negative. Well I had never seen Pirates 1-3 when a dear friend took me to see this film, and so it was all brand new to me. I found it hugely entertaining and very amusing. Johnny Depp is an out-of-this-world actor, and it seems like Jack Sparrow is a character written just for him. I hope he goes on to make many many more.

I have since bought and watched films 1-3, and so have seen all four, and I must say I was not fond at all of Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley's parts in the first 3 films. I found both of them extremely annoying and P.O.T.C part 4 is much better for their absence.

I found the plot a little predictable in places, but it matters not, because the script was bright and snappy, the action riveting and the story flows brilliantly from the end of part 3. In my opinion this film is, surprisingly, better than its predecessors. I shall certainly be buying this at the first opportunity.

3.0 out of 5 stars johnny is highly watchable again but...., 24 July 2011
I only want to add this film to my collection because I am very fond of the way Johnny Depp portraits his character Jack Sparrow. But...it is not a POTC film. It looks as if Jack and only two left of his crew are featuring in a adventurefilm with pirates. Peneleope Cruz is a far cry from feisty Elizabeth Swann. Luckily the scriptwriters have spared us a passionate romance between Angelica and Jack. That would completely ruin the character of Jack Sparrow! Ian Mc Shane as Blackbeard is good, but he usually plays villains very well. But hang on! correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't Keith Richards play "Captain Teaque alias Blackbeard" as Jacks father????Who's the fake?? As a follow up with a promising plot the producers and writers could have done so much better! After seeing the movie, my first reactions were " I miss Gore Verbinsky " and " I miss the filming on these wonderful locations " and " I doesn't work not having Jack on his beloved Pearl " Johnny, Geofrey and Kevin do their best to bring back the POTC magic but they just don't stand a chance. I think Disney made a sad mistake by cutting down so heavily on the so successful POTC formula and it shows. Real fans will know the numerous " behind the scenes " pictures of the trilogy which show a wonderful atmosphere and actors and crew having lots of fun while making the films. Johnny Depp mixing happily with everyone from the highest to the lower ranks. All that reflected in the three first movies. Behind the scenes pictures of " On Strange Tides " show a friendly, polite and serious Johnny just doing the job, mainly on studio sets. The end of OST is good, leaving an opening to go back to the good old times and the return of the Black Pearl. Let's hope that Disney in its wisdom will let the familiar crew - Pintel, Ragetti, Cotton and parrot, Marty and monkey emerge together with the ship and perhaps Orlando and Keira will swallow their pride and admit it was stupid to declare themselves too good for playing pirates. So far both have not delivered a role which justified their statement. I'm sure the scriptwriters can come up with a plot in which Jack and Elizabeth desperately needs the help of Captain Will Turner and the Flying Dutchman. In other words: give us back the familar Pirates of the Caribbean films and Gore Verbinsky! I fear the worst, for rumours go that the next film will be filmed on the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction at Disneyland!!!!
