Aldermaston Gravel Pits

Aldermaston Gravel Pits is a flooded gravel works adjacent to Aldermaston Wharf in West Berkshire. It is owned by Natural England and designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Grundons operated gravel extraction and gravel washing on the site until the end of December 2008. BBOWT has been involved in preparing part of the site for use as a community nature reserve. To that end, BBOWT received a grant from English Nature (now Natural England) to employ a project officer for two years during 2004 and 2005. At this current time, there are major health and safety issues on site which prevent it from being open to the public. BBOWT is currently involved in discussions with Natural England about the future of the site and consider it unlikely that the site will be open to the public in the near future.
