Jake Owen Releases Third Studio Album, Larry Gatlin Goes Reggae, and more!

September 1st, 2011

Opry.com’s Guide To What’s New in the Country This week.

Barefoot Blue Jean Night

Jake Owen released his third studio album, Barefoot Blue Jean Night, this week featuring the title track, plus, “Alone With You,” “The One That Got Away,” “Keepin’ It Country,” and more.

theboot.com said, “Jake Owen is a walking testament to the power of positive thinking. Take the smash summer singalong, ‘Barefoot Blue Jean Night.’ He was considering that song for his next album right as his girlfriend was breaking up with him. So Jake gave the song a shot. Fast-forward months later: the song is now his biggest-selling single ever.”

After the release, Jake tweeted:

jakeowen Ok… First 10 peeps to respond that bought my record.. I’ll follow you.. You can send me your #. I wanna call you and see what songs u dig

But he didn’t stop at ten:

jakeowen So awesome to catch up with folks who bought my record. I Valle about 50 of y’all. Left some voicemails, talked to most. Thanks y’all :)

Every spare minute he has, Jake is calling his twitter fans to thank them for purchasing the new album and to get their feedback on which songs they like.

GAC says of the album, “crisply produced, Barefoot Blue Jean Night is tied together with radio-ready choruses, hook-laden electric guitar melodies and songs about women, life’s lessons and a few good times. Jake sings with attention-grabbing imagery and a touch of nostalgia.”

Keith Urban welcomed Jake this summer to join the U.S. leg of Keith’s Get Closer 2011 World Tour.  In an interview with CMT.com, Jake said of the experience: “It’s been awesome. [Keith]‘s such a good guy. I mean, what you see is what you get. The guy is really truly a humble, laid-back guy that’s unbelievably talented on his guitar and singing and songwriting. The most valuable thing I’ve learned from him is how to stay positive and just to keep a positive attitude and always look at the bright side of things.

Reggae’s Gone Country

Grand Ole Opry Member Larry Gatlin lends his vocals to Reggae’s Gone Country, released this week. Produced by John Rich and Dean Fraser, the compilation features classic country hits covered by Jamaica’s top musicians and vocalists, plus vocals by Gatlin on one track.

Reggae’s Gone Country is taking some of Jamaican’s favorite classic American country songs and putting their beats and whole instrumentation around it while still having that root of country…It is this crazy cool idea,” says John Rich.

Just some of the featured tracks include, “He Stopped Loving Her Today,” “Feels So Right,” “Straight Tequila Night,” and more.

ABCnews.com said of the album, “Flowers On The Wall” by L.U.S.T. is a perfect blend of country and raggae, with misfit lyrics that could’ve originated in either genre.”

“I’ve worked with the best, I’ve played with the best,” Larry Gatlin said. But he never tried reggae. Until now.

Though he has visited Jamaica twice, Larry admits his knowledge of reggae is limited. He teamed up with reggae artist Romain Virgo on “California,” one of the twelve tracks on the album, to create a fresh take on “All The Gold In California,” a massive hit for The Gatlin Brothers in 1979.

“Everybody knows about Jimmy Cliff and the Marley family, but I’m not really familiar with the music. To find out that a young reggae singer from Jamaica would like the music of an old grandpa from Texas is amazing.”

Taylor Swift Is Full Of Surprises, The Band Perry Sell Out The Ryman, Shania Sells Her Heels, And More!

August 29th, 2011

by Brad Schmitt

Brad Schmitt is a longtime Nashville entertainment journalist, having shared the goods on Music City’s most interesting people in the newspaper, on TV, and online for more than 15 years. Every week, Brad hits country fans with the latest news from Nashville and the lives of their favorite country artists.

Taylor hosts string of pop stars for her run of shows in L.A.

Taylor Swift whipped out the big surprise guests during her four-night run at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

First it was Justin Bieber, then Jason Mraz, and finally, Saturday night, a taste of home: Taylor whipped out Nashville pop band Hot Chelle Rae to do its big hit, “Tonight Tonight.”

“Another magical night at Staples in LA- Thanks to my buddies Ryan and Nash from @HotChelleRae for coming out and singing “tonight tonight”!!” Taylor tweeted.

The love flowed both ways.

“Just performed tonight tonight with my homie @taylorswift13 at Staples Center and it was insane in the membrane. Luh dat girl,” Hot Chelle Rae’s Ryan Follese tweeted.

The Band Perry has one of the fastest Ryman sell outs ever

Patsy Cline, Hank Williams Jr., Charley Pride, all the country greats have played in a venue so historic, that it makes new country acts quake. The Ryman Auditorium, for more than three decades, hosted radio’s longest-running show ever, the Grand Ole Opry.

The Band Perry has appeared on the stage a few times, on nights where several acts have appeared on the same night. But the Feb. 20 show is the sibling trio’s first as a headliner at the Ryman.

And fans were apparently as excited as the band: About 2,300 tickets disappeared in 20 minutes, one of the venue’s fastest sellouts ever.

“It’s an amazing thing. So much of our creative efforts have come inside Nashville,” Kimberly Perry told The Tennessean.

“And it’s the center of our creativity. We so much revere that (Ryman) stage. And I feel like there’s an amazing spirit about that place.”

This is called making lemonade out of lemons.

You might recall when Shania Twain wiped out in high heels at the CMT Music Awards earlier this year. She put those shoes up for auction

Connie Smith Is Still Living Her Dream

August 24th, 2011

“Just to go to the Grand Ole Opry, that had been my dream, my whole life,” Connie Smith told Peter Cooper of The Tennessean.

She did much more than go to the Opry. In 1965, two years after her debut, she became a member and has since been a must-see for country music fans with one of the most recognized and coveted voices to be heard from the Opry stage. Even Dolly Parton refers to Connie as the best female country singer out there.

She has enjoyed several hits including her smash “Once A Day” and performed on countless stages, but in 1973 she decided it was time to focus more on her family and her faith.

Connie said to Cooper, “I couldn’t stand going out the door when the kids were hanging around my legs,” she says. “I thought, ‘I can’t give up on my kids or on my walk with the Lord. The only thing I can let go is the country music.’ And I wouldn’t trade my time with family for anything in the world. I have five wonderful kids and seven grandchildren. I don’t know that I thought I’d ever go back to work.”

She’s been back at it for years, of course, and Connie fans’ wait for new music is over! Connie is back in full swing with a brand  new album, LONG LINE OF HEARTACHES, out this past Tuesday, August 23. Preview and purchase the album at iTunes.com.

Connie returns to the Opry stage on Tuesday, August 30. Click here to get tickets and hear her new music live or come by The Opry Shop on September 3 and have your copy of Long Line of Heartaches signed by Connie in person!

Also, this year Connie is being recognized by the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum as their Artist in Residence. She will host and perform two more intimate concerts at the Ford Theater on Monday, August 29 and again on September 12. Click here for tickets.

Exclusive Video from Sunny Sweeney’s New Release, Plus New Music From Pistol Annies and more!

August 22nd, 2011

Opry.com’s Guide To What’s New in the Country This week.

Concrete

On August 23, Sunny Sweeney returns with her second album, Concrete, featuring the top 10 hit, “From A Table Away,” and her current single, “Staying’s Worse Than Leaving.”  Sunny co-wrote more than half the album, which was inspired by the recent divorce from her husband of 10 years.

“It’s about real life, and it’s about things that actually happen in life. I mean, it’s about relationship stuff, drinkin’, cheatin’ – things that actually happen in real life, and that part of it is what came from the tradition of country music, which is what I grew up on. I mean, Loretta Lynn lived every single word that she wrote, and if you can’t tell that then you’re not listening to the words properly.”

Sunny has been sharing the new music from Concrete with fans this summer on the Brad Paisley H2O II World Tour, as well as during recent appearances at the Grand Ole Opry. To get a preview of the new release, check out the following exclusive video of Sunny performing an acoustic version of “Worn Out Heart”!

Hell On Heels

Miranda Lambert got together this summer with two of her best friends and songwriting partners, Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Pressley, to form the super-group Pistol Annies, and the girls release their debut album, Hell On Heels, this week.

“I am so excited about Pistol Annies,” said Miranda. “I feel the songs we are writing are digging deeper into our country roots and getting back to music that inspired us all. Angaleena, Ashley and I are hoping more artists collaborate. This band is made up of three real country girls with three very real stories to tell.”

The title track is currently climbing up the charts at radio and GAC, and should keep Miranda fans very happy–at least until she releases her new album, Four The Record, late this fall.

Wrapped Up Good

Rumor has it an unnamed U.S. record executive told this Australian trio of sisters, “You won’t make it here, because you are girls & girls don’t sell in country music.” That wasn’t about to stop The McClymonts from trying, and despite the initial rude welcome, these twenty-somethings have found a stateside supporter in record producer Nathan Chapman–the name responsible for producing three blockbuster albums with another once-thought-unlikely country girl, Taylor Swift.

Wrapped Up Good and its title track have been dominating the charts in their home country, but on August 23, the sisters will share their debut album with American country fans, many of whom may already be familiar with the trio–The McClymonts toured with Jason Aldean in 2010, and their single is currently in rotation at GAC.

The sisters already have another milestone to look forward to: The McClymonts will make their Opry debut on September 9. Click here to purchase tickets!

With all the new artists and new sounds in country music, it’s good to know that Opry member Connie Smith is bringing back that classic country sound in her new album Long Line of Heartaches. This marks the first album Connie has released in the past 15 years. Produced by husband and fellow Opry member Marty Stuart, this album is a family affair as Connie’s three daughters join her for “Take My Hand.”

Connie will be back on the Opry August 30 so Opry fans are sure to get live performances of some of these new songs. Click here for tickets.

Stay tuned to continue “Tracking New Music” by country music legends, Opry members, and new stars!

Katy Perry Has Country Fans, Paisley Plays with Rolling Stone, Dierks Turns Down “The Donald”, and more!

August 22nd, 2011

by Brad Schmitt

Brad Schmitt is a longtime Nashville entertainment journalist, having shared the goods on Music City’s most interesting people in the newspaper, on TV, and online for more than 15 years. Every week, Brad hits country fans with the latest news from Nashville and the lives of their favorite country artists.

Reba, Faith, Lady A check out pop star Katy Perry’s Nashville show

Pop star and Taylor Swift BFF Katy Perry told a Nashville crowd Friday night (Aug. 19) that several country stars were among them — but not Taylor Swift.

Katy (“I Kissed a Girl”) told the Bridgestone Arena audience that Reba McEntire, Faith Hill and members of Lady Antebellum were in the crowd, The Tennessean reports.

And Katy says she has a long history of songwriting in Nashville, staying at an AmeriSuites near town.

“For months on end, just writing my own little songs, trying to make a record. And now we’re here tonight, celebrating. Thank you so much!” she told the crowd.

Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson to go into Nashville Songwriters’ Hall of Fame

Congrats to Garth Brooks and Alan Jackson, who are both going into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Garth co-wrote “The Thunder Rolls,” “The River” and several other of his big hits.

Alan wrote almost all of his big hits, including “Chattahoochie” and “Where Were You.”

The two will be inducted along with three other songwriters (John Bettis, Thom Schuyler, and Allen Shamblin) in October at a Nashville hotel.

Is Brad Paisley the fifth Rolling Stone?

Could be a new superband.

Brad Paisley, Darius Rucker and Ronnie Wood of iconic rock band The Rolling Stones were onstage together in London one night last week.

The three were performing Brad’s song “Alcohol” at the end of his show in a packed O2 arena. Ronnie, one of the Stones’ guitarists, first showed up for a version of “Let the Good Times Roll,” and Ronnie stayed for one more song.

Little known fact: Ronnie also plays pedal steel guitar, a staple of country music.

Brad continues his tour of Europe with shows in Ireland, Norway, Sweden and Denmark in the next two weeks.

Dierks turned down Donald Trump, ‘Celebrity Apprentice’

Dierks Bentley won’t ever get fired from “Celebrity Apprentice” because he wouldn’t even turn in an application when asked.

Show winner John Rich suggested Dierks as the next country star contestant for Donald Trump’s NBC reality show—and producers in fact approached him, Dierks told Seattle radio station KMPS.

“I was flattered to be asked, but at the end of the day . . . it’s writing songs, making records, touring. That’s everything to me,” Dierks said on the Candy + Potter morning show.

“That’s the dream, and the dream takes up a lot of time—with two kids and a wife, my plate’s pretty full.”

Opry Member Del McCoury Among Inductees To The International Bluegrass Music Hall Of Fame

August 18th, 2011

Bluegrass ambassador and leader of one of the most awarded bands in the history of International Bluegrass Music Awards, Del McCoury, along with pioneering bass player and guitar stylist George Shuffler will be this year’s inductees to the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame.

Del made his first Grand Ole Opry appearance in 1963 when he was recruited by Bill Monroe to join the Blue Grass Boys. For the next quarter of a century, Del was a part-time musician. Though he couldn’t devote himself entirely to his music, his reputation as a singer of unsurpassed intensity grew steadily.  Beginning in the 1990’s, Del and his family moved to Nashville to pursue music full-time as the Del McCoury Band. The group quickly developed into one of the finest units to ever grace a bluegrass stage.

In 2003, the band debuted their own record label, McCoury Music, with the release of the Grammy-nominated It’s Just The Night. Soon after, while accepting a record-setting eighth IBMA Entertainer of the Year Award, Del received the invitation he had waited for his entire life: to become a member of the Grand Ole Opry. A member since October 25, 2003, Del has proven not to be a relic of bluegrass music’s past, but an architect of its future.

The International Bluegrass Music Awards are voted on by the professional membership of the IBMA, which serves as the trade association for the bluegrass music industry. The World of Bluegrass Week is September 26 – October 2 in Nashville, TN. The Awards are scheduled for Thursday, September 29 at former Grand Ole Opry home, the Ryman Auditorium.  For more information and tickets, click here.

The Entertainer of the Year category includes Dailey and Vincent, The Grascals, The Boxcars, The Gibson Brothers, and Steve Martin & The Steep Canyon Rangers.  For a complete list of nominees, click here.

The Del McCoury Band will appear on the Opry stage Tuesday, September 20. Also performing: Randy Houser, Thompson Square, and more! Click here for tickets.

Martina McBride Will “Love You Through It” In Her New Video

August 17th, 2011

Opry favorite Martina McBride released the new video for her current single “I’m Gonna Love You Through It” on CMT.com today, which features multiple cancer survivors and their supporters, including ABC’s Good Morning America host Robin Roberts, NBC’s Today Show host Hoda Kotb, Grammy Award Winner Sheryl Crow, and ABC Journalist Katie Couric.

“I knew it was a song I wanted to record because of the strong message of hope that it sends,” Martina McBride said. “I’ve heard so many stories about how music can change lives from songs I have recorded like ‘A Broken Wing,’ ‘Independence Day,’ and ‘Concrete Angel.’ I believe ‘I’m Gonna Love You Through It’ will offer hope and inspiration to so many people who are going through or have been through cancer and the people who love them through it. It takes a lot of strength and a lot of love to get through something like that. I think this song says what so many people want to express to their loved ones.”

The music video highlights the many feats cancer patients undergo, and the visual elements coupled with the song’s lyrics send a message of hope to survivors and their supporters.  The video features testimonials from celebrities as well as local survivors about how cancer affected their lives.

The single will be available beginning Friday and her upcoming album, Eleven, is set for release on October 11, which includes ‘I’m gonna Love You Through It,’ and her recent single ‘Teenage Daughters.’

Plus, catch Martina on the Orpy on October 22 along with Ronnie Milsap, Edens Edge and more! Click here for tickets.

Jennifer Nettles is Moved by Pain and Heroism, Vince Gill Turned Down Opry, Keith Urban Hands Over Keys, and more!

August 16th, 2011

by Brad Schmitt

Brad Schmitt is a longtime Nashville entertainment journalist, having shared the goods on Music City’s most interesting people in the newspaper, on TV, and online for more than 15 years. Every week, Brad hits country fans with the latest news from Nashville and the lives of their favorite country artists.

Nettles: ‘There are no words….’

Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland tries to process the tragedy that killed five fans and injured at least 45 others at a concert Saturday night at the Indiana State Fair.

“I am so moved. Moved by the grief of those families who lost loved ones. Moved by the pain of those who were injured and the fear of their families,” she posted on the band’s Website.

“Moved by the great heroism as I watched so many brave Indianapolis fans actually run toward the stage to try and help lift and rescue those injured. Moved by the quickness and organization of the emergency workers who set up the triage and tended to the injured.

“There are no words to process a moment of this magnitude and gravity. There are only prayers for peace in the hearts of the bereft, and prayers of thanksgiving for those who were spared or safe. A piece of our heart is left in that grandstand. May God provide peace and healing to the people of Indianapolis.”

Strong storm winds pushed over the stage and other equipment onto the crowd that was waiting for Sugarland to come on. A fair spokesman told CBS News today (Aug. 15) that they thought they had at least another 30 minutes to decide whether to evacuate the crowd.

In that same story, though, a meteorologist said warnings for strong winds had been out 30 minutes before the stage collapse.

Vince Gill actually turned down an Opry performance invite 20 years ago??

You’ve likely read all about Saturday night’s celebration of Vince Gill’s 20 years of Opry membership.

But a big Schmitt Hits the Fans mazel tov on the landmark!

My favorite part of Saturday night is when Vince told the crowd he turned down his first-ever invitation to appear at the Opry 20 years ago because he had a previous engagement: Accompanying his then-little daughter Jenny at her grade-school talent show.

Keith Urban hands over keys to Habitat home he helped build

A year or so ago, Keith Urban played a gig in Knoxville, Tenn., to help raise money for Knoxville’s Habitat for Humanity, which helps provide homes for people down on their financial luck.

Fast forward to Friday, where Keith went to a brand-new home in Knoxville, known as the “Keith Urban Home,” to present keys to local woman Regina Olum.

“It’s a real honor to be a part of this for Regina,” Keith said. “It’s a beautiful thing when a house becomes more than walls and a roof but a place where memories are made.”
