Part of the great appeal of Bridesmaids — and indeed, of any Judd Apatow flick — is the loose, sometimes improvised dialogue between characters. But for every witty line that makes it into the film, there’s tons more material that ends up on the cutting room floor. Thankfully, that’s what Blu-rays, DVDs, and YouTube are for.
If you saw the movie, you may remember the scene where disgruntled jewelry store employee Annie (Kristen Wiig) begins lashing out at her customers, including one pretty teenager (Mia Frampton) who gives as good as she gets. Only a few choice lines were seen in the movie, but there’s much more where that came from, in the form of a 10-minute extended scene from the Blu-ray titled “The Longest Argument Ever.” And you may want to treasure this extra bit of Bridesmaids, because if co-star Jon Hamm‘s comments are to be believed, a Bridesmaids 2 may not be coming down the pipeline after all. When Judd Apatow announced his upcoming film, once tentatively titled This is Forty, we immediately wondered about the cast. That’s not just a result of Apatow’s fondness for a stable of comic actors that goes back to the Freaks & Geeks days, but a natural question given that the film is a spin-off from Apatow’s previous movie Knocked Up.
The story centers around Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann‘s characters from Knocked Up, so one obvious question concerned the participation of Seth Rogen. Would he show up? Now the actor says no. As a consolation prize, he announces that he and Evan Goldberg (left, above) will shoot Jay and Seth Vs the Apocalypse, a film they’ve talked about for a couple years, next February. Read More »
I’d like to make this the ‘leading lady’ edition of Casting Bits, but I don’t think Caleb Landry Jones would like that very much. (Jason Segel would probably be OK with it.) Still, after the break you’ll find that two films have chosen their lead actresses, while Jones joins Jordan. Ahem. To wit:
- Alexandra Maria Lara (above) takes the (female) lead in Ron Howard’s racing movie Rush,
- Cody Horn will be the leading lady in Soderbergh’s Magic Mike,
- Caleb Landry Jones, aka the First Class version of Banshee, joins Neil Jordan’s Byzantium,
- and, as a final note, Jason Segel appears to be confirmed for Judd Apatow’s This is Forty.

Three more have signed on for What to Expect When You’re Expecting, Kirk Jones‘ adaptation of the classic pregnancy manual. The comedy follows several different couples, Love Actually-style, as each experiences pregnancy and the miracle of childbirth. Bridesmaids actress Wendi McLendon-Covey will play a colleague and friend of Jennifer Lopez‘ character; True Blood‘s Joe Manganiello will be a single guy whose carefree, glamorous lifestyle is the envy of all the local dads; and Glee star Matthew Morrison has won the part of Evan, who teams up with Cameron Diaz‘ character on a celebrity dance show (really) and eventually gets her pregnant.
In addition to the actors named above, What to Expect will also feature Elizabeth Banks, Chris Rock, Brooklyn Decker, Anna Kendrick, Rodrigo Santoro, Chace Crawford, Rob Huebel, and McLendon-Covey‘s Bridesmaids co-star Rebel Wilson. Having previously starred on Gilmore Girls and her own show Mike and Molly, Melissa McCarthy was well-known to TV audiences before her breakout performance in this summer’s surprise smash Bridesmaids. Since then she’s been mentioned as the possible star of several projects and now she’s finally committed to one. She’ll appear in Judd Apatow‘s Untitled 2012 film (rumored to be called This is Forty) that’s currently in production. It stars Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann reprising their roles from Knocked Up and, in the film, McCarthy will play a mother at the school where their kids attend. Scarlett Johansson may seem like an unlikely lead for a Judd Apatow film, but in this context her casting actually makes a lot of sense. Johansson has signed on to star in Can a Song Save Your Life?, which will be written and directed by John Carney (Once) and produced by Apatow. The film follows “a washed-up A&R man who forms a passionate bond with a young singer-songwriter (Johansson) from out of town.”
The project calls for Johansson to sing, which shouldn’t be a problem for the actress. Johansson is in fact a professional singer, having released an album of Tom Waits covers titled Anywhere I Lay My Head back in 2008 and a collaboration with Pete Yorn called Break Up in 2009. Though the male lead has yet to be cast, Mark Ruffalo and Jim Carrey have been rumored as possibilities. (FWIW, I vote Ruffalo.) Shooting on the film will begin in New York City next year. Once you have a big, box office smash, a filmmaker is more or less given carte blanche, especially if they want to make a movie in the same genre. Bridesmaids director Paul Feig used some of that good will last week and got Universal to purchase a new pitch that would once again team him with frequent producer Judd Apatow. At the time, we had no idea what the film would be other than “an unconventional love story.” Deadline now seems to know more and says the lead roles in film are being kept warm for Jon Hamm and Melissa McCarthy. It’s no secret that Judd Apatow likes to cast people over and over again in his movies. Large chunks of The 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up and Funny People all feature the same actors, not to mention those populating the many films he’s produced too. His currently-untitled next directorial feature, rumored to be called This Is Forty, goes one step further, casting Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann as the exact same characters they played in Knocked Up. Plus, Variety is now reporting that three more Apatow alumni are joining the cast, which already includes Albert Brooks and Megan Fox. They are Chris O’Dowd (Bridesmaids), Lena Dunham (Tiny Furniture and Apatow’s upcoming HBO show Girls) and Charlyne Yi (Paper Hearts, Knocked Up). Wyatt Russell (Cowboys & Aliens) has also been cast.

Briefly: With the help of a relentless and well-tuned publicity push and the simple fact of being a damn good movie, Paul Feig‘s first directorial effort, Bridesmaids, has now grossed over $100m domestic. As a celebration of sorts, Universal has bought a comic pitch for a new film that will see him writing and directing another movie, with Judd Apatow producing.
We don’t have the details of the story, beyond the fact that it is “an unconventional love story,” and that it is an idea Paul Feig has been working for some time. We know that a sequel to Bridesmaids is possible, but this is a different project. [Deadline]
As Cannes rolls along there are a lot of new images and trailers for great, or at least interesting films. And then there’s this one. Zookeeper is the movie in which Kevin James thinks about quitting the job he loves (he’s a zookeeper, duh) so that Leslie Bibb will like him. But his animal charges can talk, as it turns out, and they teach him all about how to woo women. He probably ends up with Rosario Dawson, who has been working alongside him all this time.
