Addicks move for Morrison

Posted on: Tue 12 Jul 2011

Tom Harvey reports

Charlton have added yet another new signing to their ranks after snapping up defender Michael Morrison from Sheffield Wednesday for an undisclosed fee, the Addicks announced on Friday.

The 23-year-old centre-back has penned a three-year deal with Charlton, and becomes the club's 11th senior signing of the summer, while youngsters Nick Pope and Ruben Bover Izquierdo have also arrived in recent weeks.

Born in Bury St Edmonds, Suffolk, Morrison started his career at Cambridge United, becoming the youngest-ever player to feature for their reserves at the age of 15.

He went on to make his first-team debut for the U's aged 17 against Halifax Town in October 2005, and was named Cambridge's young player of the year three seasons in a row from 2006-08.

After twice playing for the England C representative side, Morrison was signed for an undisclosed fee by Leicester City in July 2008, teaming up with fellow new recruit Chris Powell at The Walkers Stadium.

Addicks manager Powell told the official website: "Michael is a player I know very well from my time at Leicester.

"He came from Cambridge to Leicester in League One and played nearly all season. He knows the level and was fine with it and in the Championship as well.

"He's a player I know I can trust. He has already got 100 games behind him and I think he's a player who can do well for us. It's great to have him on board."

Morrison made his Foxes debut in a 2-0 League One victory over Milton Keynes Dons on August 9th, and would go on to play 43 times for City in the 2008/09 campaign as the East Midlands side secured promotion to the Championship.

He played a further 35 league and cup games the following campaign, and added 15 more first-team appearances to his name in the 2010/11 campaign before he departed for The Owls last January.

He then made his home debut for Wednesday in a 2-2 draw with the Addicks - a game which Powell watched from the Hillsborough stands after being named as Charlton's new boss a day before.

In total, Morrison played 15 times for the Owls, but his last appearance came towards the end of March after he fell out of favour with Wednesday boss Gary Megson.

Morrison will, therefore, be looking to kick-start his career under Powell in SE7 as Charlton bid to seal promotion to the Championship at the third time of asking.

Morrison, who could feature when Charlton play Welling United in their first pre-season fixture of the summer on Saturday (3pm), told www.cafc.co.uk: "I'm happy to be here. It seems to have taken a while and a lot of work has gone on behind the scenes.

"I know Chris from working with him before and I've seen the calibre of players that have come in. The club is well equipped to push for the title. Ultimately promotion is the main thing and the team has what's needed to get out of this division."
