Shikine-jima

Shikine-jima

Shikine-jima (式根島) is a small island of the northern Izu-shotō located 2.5 km offshore from the southwestern end of Nii-jima (Nii-jima is just visible at the top-right corner of the above image).

At 3.9 km² in area, Shikine-jima has dimensions of 3 km in length (northeast to southwest) and 2.5 km in width (north to south). The interior of the island is generally of low elevation, rising to 99 m above sea level at Kanbiki and to 109 m near Suminoi. The coastline is irregular and highly indented with many small bays and coves that are separated from one another by the low cliffs, hills and rocky peninsulas that descend from the interior. Offshore are small islets and rocks, particularly off the southern shore.

Signs of geothermal activity can be found along the southern coast where hot springs occur at Jinata, Okama Bay and Ashitsuki.
